Hey All!

I have been playing Salamanders since the Armageddon book. In that time, I've grown tired of painting green, green, and more green. I'm trying an alternate color scheme for my Sternguard Veteran Squad. I rushed these pictures and the model is nowhere close to being finished, I need to tone down a lot of the line work as it is too think for my liking.

A quick overview of how I came to choose this color scheme for the Vets. Salamanders live solitary lives when they are not with their battle brothers. They are constantly honing their weapons and armor. Not to mention they are fiddling with anything they can get their hands on. Way back in 3rd ed all Veteran Sergeants were considered "tech marines" hence the choice for the red rebreather. The rest of the squad will have red helmets. The armor is black because it is forged by the Veterans themselves on Nocturne and is represents the anvil is was forged on. The green trimmings allow them to signify their allegiance to their Chapter.

The Thunderhammer will count as a Power Fist. I'm a fluff nut incase you could not tell. Please let me know what you guys think.

If you go the way of accepting Nick Kyme's Tome of Fire series as fluff ~(Which I have to say I do - simply because he's fleshed it out a bit), then Techmarines have a red right pauldron and red helmets. IMHO, I would avoid a red helmet simple because it could be confused with a Codex-compliant Chapter's Sergeants, and it could equally be confused with the fluff for Salamanders Techmarines if you field them together. Again, IMO, I'm not so keen on the black armour - simply because IA ten, and the Tome of Fire series, presents veterans as being in standard colours (Although I remember a piece of old fluff stated that they reversed the pauldron colours).

All that said though, it's you model and what you've done so far, aside from my personal preferences, is very good! Keep up the good work!

new brighter pictures up.

In terms of the IA I follow most of what is laid forth by it. In my mind ( this is my own sort of made up world ) once Salamanders ascend to the veteran status they are forced to reacquaint themselves with Promethean Cult, allowing them to maintain all of their own personal gear, while still forging their own.

Sadly, I have not read any of Nick Kyme's stuff. All I know is that he is responsible for the ashen black skin and red eyes fiasco, which I am very very against.

Thank you for the positive feedback on the model! It is a converted limited edition black templar captain with a quick hand swap and some green stuff work.

He looks good from the back but the front looks a bit busy. It might be the blue details and the brightness of the red.

You may want to read some of Mr. Kymes stuff - it is actaully very good. Just as a bit of an OT curiosity (I hope you don't mind too much), but may I ask what exactly you don't like so much about the ash skin, red eyes fluff?

More On-Topic, I'll agree with Tyberos that the front is possibly too busy. For my tastes, there's too many vivid colours suc has the red, green and blue, that they are all vying for attention. If you simplify it down to just one spot colour (The red perhaps?), then it may look less cluttered and more appealing. However, that's just my personal preference - YMMV.
