So I'm sitting on a bit of a quandary and thought I'd ask around and see what others think and what news they've heard.

For a long while I've wanted to build a Wood Elf army; however it's been on hold for a long while and having seen most if nearly all the other fantasy factions getting a pretty major overhaul of models and new units from GW I've kind of sat there waiting and hoping that WE would be the next army - sadly they appear to be a bit like the Dark Eldar in being passed a lot and the longer it goes on the more time is passing and I'm not playing. The other factor is that I'm just not sure if GW will take the WE the direction I'd like to see them go in (a more animal influenced faction as opposed to more trees and tree ents - esp considering that High elves already have dragons, eagles, pheonix and lions appearing in their line up).

So I can wait around and hope that WE come up soonish with an update, though I've honestly not put much time into hunting down rumour for their release nor have I heard anything of the direction they could go in.

The other option is to start a new army that can go cross game between fantasy and 40K - ie a Daemons of Chaos army - specifically in my case a Slaanesh and Khorn force with maybe a few Tzeentch (though basically the only things I don't like in the line are Nurgle units and the flamers of Tzeentch.
Some light research on this shows that such a combination can work in effective armies; further considering that the only difference between the two ranges is the base shape it shouldn't be too hard to mod the setup to work for both - I'm thinking that using the round bases (for 40K) and then simply getting (or making) a few formation bases for Fantasy (thinks things move in formation there anyway for the most part) with round slots for the bases to fit into (I wouldn't be surprised if there are a fwe of these made commercially as well).

So there it is - wait for WE and hope they turn out along the lines I'd like them to or jump in and make a demonic army.
So which do you think I should choose; are there strong rumours of WE appearing this year - anything on what they might if if/when they do appear? Or should I just shelve that plan (maybe get some ArcWorlde Elf stuff when it comes out) and start with a Demonic army (if so and if any demon players pass by any tips on what to start with? )

Well, I started Empire only a few months before they redid it, and the Empire revamp was not nearly as wide-ranging as the one WE will (hopefully) get, at a time when WE and Brets were considered the most likely to be next-in-line. The rumormill is like predicting the weather: it's not bad for the next day or so, but anything long-term is pretty much impossible. The only safe bet is that WE will probably get some kind of large monster or other model, because that's been the trend.

Warhammer is flexible enough that you can convert the WE to be more in-line with whatever theme you want. If it's mainly thematic/cosmetic/fluffy reasons you're concerned with, you should go ahead and start WE.

Orks - "Da Rust Gitz" : 3000 pts
Empire - "Nordland Expeditionary Corps" : 3000 pts
Dwarfs - "Sons of Magni" 2000 points
Cygnar - "Black Swan" 100 pts
Trollbloods - "The Brotherhood"
Haqqislam- "Al-Istathaan": 300 points
Commonwealth - Desert Rats /2nd New Zealand 1000 points

They do have a cheap(er than the rest) battleforce that has much of their core army in it - I'm just on the fence wondering if they'll end up with some re-designed troops - their riders for example are rather plain. (least compared to what I've seen GW put out for other factions).

Well..there have been rumors that WE and bretts are next year for the past 5 years...

All i can say is yes the battalions do tend to go up in price after they have been redone, so if you like the models and would be happy to wait than awsome, Also both WE and Bretts got almost completely re-done last time round (although it was a while ago )so it is unlikely that they will get an overhaul this time.

Hmm didn't realise it had been that long - even if they got redone last time 5 years or so is a big gap between releases - might mean they just boost it up with the expected big unit or do a full reworking like some armies got - gah I wish GW was at least semi-standard in how they re-did armies if they can't give us a release schedule

You mis-understand me, the army books are a few years older than that with WE being published 2005 and IIRC brets were 2003, However both have there complete lines currently out so you could PROBABLY place money that all that will happen to WE is a few units move to plastic, you get a new monster/old monster in plastic and new characters are realeased.

Yeah, I'd start now if I were you. Like brentyboi says, WE and Brets have been "due for an update" for ages and even the current rumours put Dark Elves and Dwarves before them.

Hmm based on the rumour and my desire to possible see if they'll redo some of the core troops I think what I'll do is build a Slaanesh army now (since its current in rules and models and has a look I like). And then buy the odd bit of WE stuff bit by bit.

Considering that there is time that should let me buy up a few core models from their range so that when they re-launch I'll have a core to start from and add to.

Yeah, Core is always a good start, since it's unlikely that you won't be able to make use of it when the new book is released. New models for existing units are unlikely as well, based on GW's current trend.

Note that the current trend is for existing plastics to be left alone and new units introduced. GW don't think people will buy new versions of old kits you see.

Therefore, I'd be fairly confident that the models in the battalion will remain unchanged although the actual content may vary slightly. You will probably get fewer models for the same or increased price. Wood Elf plastics are actually pretty good in my opinion.
