So I'm still mulling over if I should start a deamon army or not and decided to do some ground research into purchase options just to get a minds eye idea of what would go well on the table;

Thus far I don't have the codex, so I've searched around and read army lists from around the net to get a rough idea of what is popular and what I see being used by people. From what I've seen:

1) Heralds of Slaanesh are popular with several often being taken - most of the time they are basic on foot heralds with those on chariots in more speed themed forces.

2) Deamonetts are popular in groups of 10-20 (depending on the points level) with full command options present at the 15 unit mark (10 and it tends to be a smaller command). Of course being core troops there are often several groups with even division of the warriors between them.

3) Bloodletters are similar to the Deamonetts, although often taken in smaller numbers (again depending on the points limit) - although this might be as most lists I've seen tend to be Slaanesh with Khorn support.

4) Seekers - seem to work in either a loan group of 5 up to around 10 or even 15; but never more than one group. Spoken of well for their small price increase over dreamonetts and their faster movement, although again I tend to see them in smaller groups.

5) Chariots - seem to be really unpopular and it seems everyone goes for soulgrinders over chariots. Hellflayer appears not to be used at all with people sticking to one or two regular chariots or the exalted.

6) Bloodcrushers - very much like the seekers in that its another single unit of variable number used as a shock troop and never really bulked up on beyond one unit - unsure as to if anyone uses the command options for them much.

7) Flamers of Tzeentch - granted they are not Khorn or Slaanesh, but I've seen them in a few lists as a powerful ranged force; though generally only ever a unit of around 3 or so.

8) Flesh Hounds - seen these in a good few lists in both small and larger groups. They appear to be good as shock troop or can be bulked up into a larger threatening core force.

9) Fiends of Slaanesh - in mixed armies I've seen these in small units of around under 5 whilst in solo slaanesh far more of up to 20 or so.

10) Skull Cannon - seen several lists going with one or even two of these

11) Soul Grinders (often in nurgle configuration) - very popular and common loan or in pairs.

So those are some rough thoughts on the numbers and general popularity/use that I've seen the units used in and I know that I've mostly left the hero's alone as this is the most varied area and I've seen a lot of general options being used (mostly dependant on what people have). The Heralds were the most common repeating choice.
About the only thing that surprises me is the chariots of Slaanesh being less popular options; however considering that most of the time they appear to be being dropped in favour of allowing powerful ranged options (eg soul grinders of skull cannon) in an army that otherwise is very close combat focused that might well explain why they are not being used as often.
