I've never been much of a painter, I tend to stop and start alot, lost model I painted was over 2 years ago.

Nearly finished my latest guy, but I'm looking for some criticism.

I've always tried to do highlighting, but I'm not even sure I like it, or maybe it's the fact that I'm not very good at it
I would like to trying some weather or maybe light battle damage, something to *dirty up* the model, but I'm not sure where to get started.

I think the model looks great, Very clean and within the lines. The shading is also good and the highlighting to me seems great.

My old critisism would be that some parts of the red seem a little thick so you could try thinning your paint a little more.

Some squad/chapter markings would also make a nice addition.

Overall a really nice model.

I think the model looks very good but the base lets it down. Get some texture paint or something on there next to the rock (GW stuff ain't bad but Vellajo is better and comes in a tub 10 times as big for only twice the price).

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I love the paint job, looks fantastic!

The base needs a new color, might I suggest grays or browns, static grass, fine sand, shale. just use colors on the base that help make the figure stand out not blend into the model itself. Some chapter markings etc.

That is really some great work for being out of the hobby a while as you said.

Sorry, when I said "Nearly finished", i might have been exaggerating, not even undercoated his boltgun

I went to base the model the night I made this post, but my PVA glue turned to water and went bloody everywhere, I spent a good 10-15 minutes with a wetbrush cleaning up the model with my tears.
Found a local model shop and bought myself some new PVA glue and brushes, quite bizarre seeing all the new paints and their funky names, all mine or simply called Washes and Colours, my old stuff is simply called stuff like "Snot Green".

Gonna have a go at basing the model later to do and trying a bit more highlighting, put my new fine detail brush to work.

Looks good, nice and clean. I think a little weathering might be something to look at, and/or some paint chipping effects, but this depends on your taste. I like marines beaten and dirty, but some like them just like yours, clean and crisp.

As mentioned above , he looks great. Although personally I'd at least paint the shoulder pad trims in a contrasting colour. Just to break up the red a bit.

Looks good, I think the paint looks a *little* thick so might need to apply in thinner layers, but the colouring and highlighting is good. You'll only get better as you paint more, especially with the highlights.

For weathering, depending on your bases you could add some dirt or dust to the boots, as you'd get trekking through terrain. Chips on the shoulder pads can add a little something. Just don't do too much, I always find it tempting to weather like mad

Thanks for all the feedback.

All my paints went solid when I stopped a few years back, been thinning them down with windscreen washer and water, but not got it right yet.

Here's the model, decided I've pretty much finished with him.

Was going to try weathering/chipping, but wasn't sure how it would look on this kind of highlighted model.
Think for the next guy I'm going to just shade him, then try some weathering.

As always, I appreciate any criticism, this was my 1st time actually basing a model.

I was wondering about protecting him with a varnish coat, but never done that sort of thing before.

Still a great looking model!

As for the basing, it does need a little work. The material hasn't reached the edges of the base, and it needs to have an interesting feature on it (a rock or something similar). This could just be me - I don't like grass on bases in the 41st millennium - but don't worry, it was your first attempt. I can remember my first attempt - god it was horrid! So at least your base actually looks decent - that's the important thing here.

As for varnish, I can't give you any advice on that as I haven't used any. But have a little experiment I guess . As for shading and weathering, shading is a great idea to do. It sinks into the recesses and makes the model look more crisp and realistic. Mind you if you want to keep the original model colour on the surface, be sure to go over again, minding the recesses of course. And weathering really is up to you. Have these Space Marines been on a long and hard campaign? are they hardened veterans of war? The way they look should reflect that. It's all up to you my friend!

vastly superior to a lot of the crap i see. It actually looks like a paintjob where someone tried and managed to succeed. Without adding battle damage or secondary light you really cant improve a paintjob like this one, and i wouldnt expect a random marine to have those things anyway.
