This may sound like a reeeeeally stupid question, but can Hive Tyrants join Carnifex squads? I can't find anything about IMC's going MC squads anywhere.

I just don't understand why I wouldn't want a shooty Tyrant in a squad of Dakkafex, or a Swarmlord running with a squad of three Screamer Killers. Please elaborate.

You need the Independent Character (or similar rule) in order to join a squad.

The fact that it's an MC and the Carnifex brood are MCs has no bearing on whether it can join the squad or not, the fact that it isn't an independent character stops it from joining any squad apart from Tyrant Guard, which it may online join thanks to the Shield Wall special rule.

You know what really bugs me? I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

Before the final blow was struck, I tore open a portal in space and flung him into the Warp, where my evil is law! Now the fool seeks to return to real-space, and undo the evil that is Chaos!"

An Independent Character can join any non-vehicle unit that can consist of more than one model.

Carnifex's are a unit that can be more than one model. So they can be joined by an independent character, even if there is only 1 Carnifex in the unit, but the Hive Tyrant is not an IC.

I don't think there are any Independent Character Monstrous Creatures left. The closest thing is the Hive Tyrant's ability to join Tyrant Guard, but that doesn't apply to anything else.

the special character Riptide in the Farsight supplement is an IC.

Although you could have tyranid primes join the carnifex squad. That or a parasite of mortrex to give them the increased toughness against shooting
