This might be a newb question but...

how do certain stores have models for cheaper price than GW's market price? Do they receive a discount when purchasing GW products in bulk? For example there are stores that sell $35 USD model kits for $29. If they are making profit, it means they've purchased it for something around $20-25 from GW. How does that work?

Are we talking independent retailers here? If so, yes they do get a discount from buying off GW, but they have to register as an independent retailer on the site to be allowed the discount. Then it's all down to the reseller. Most retailers who are independent are nice (a guy down the road in ChristChurch, UK gives me a 10% discount whenever I visit), but making money is priority for some

Trade prices are generally lower than retail pricing. The retailer can sell at whatever price they see fit.

IN that same vein, what are some reputable independent retailers to get 40K stuff from?

Oh really? The retailer down the road told me about people who are "retailers" in their bedrooms all you need is some information (not sure what) on the GW website and you can become a "retailer"

Naturally people have thought of it, but generally speaking the effort of setting yourself up as a retailer is not worth whatever savings you'll get on your man dolly purchases.

This.

In just about every Manufacturer --> wholesale / distribution model, you have a trade or "list" price. A customer is then given a multiplier, which is exactly what it sounds like - basically a discount off of list price. Often the volume a customer buys justifies a multiplier.

The wholesaler / distributor (basically, the re-seller), then sets whatever price he wants to for the margin he wants to make. If his overhead and costs are low enough, he can take lower margins than competitors and try to take business away from them. Then again, he needs to be careful that he is not leaving money on the table and wasting profit in needless discount.

The entirety of the bid spec construction market is predicated on this exact system. Mini's basically aren't any different, aside from the fact that there is a recommended MSRP, and its a much smaller version of the same model.

There's also the trade agreement you'd be signing to be a GW stockist. People who've actually run game stores can tell you how there's worked, but it's not like you'd just be able to buy a box or two every few months.

Unless you hooked up with several friends to do it i doubt you could be sneaky and retail yourself just for the discounts. I imagine you'd have to purchase in decent bulks, which defeats the discount if youre just buying for yourself unless you just have oodles of money to waste and want to collect ALL THE ARMIEZ!! lol

If i had 5-6 friends and we all played different races, i'd probably look into it. Thats probably the number of "customers" you'd need to obtain/keep the retailer status

Probably wrong, but my old store told me that they have to order a certain amount of $$ per month to keep themselves labeled as a retailer for GW

Exactly what i was thinking. Without something like this there would be no way to verify theyre actually a business or someone trying to get a discount without personally investigating it (i.e. noticing crazy low purchases for a "store" and/or physically visiting said "store" lol)

That actually sounds rather viable. Grab all your 40k pals and get all your shenanigans for cheap. Although I usually don't like doing sketchy things like that, the way GW's been behaving, I wouldn't feel too much guilt like I usually would.

First off you have to provide a physical street address and pictures of your store front when applying for GW direct purchasing, now you might be able to go through a distributor, but then you are cutting another percentage of your discount out. Not to mention that I think the minimum start up order with GW is like 10k and you dont get to pick what you want, they have pre-set packages at different dollar amoutns (which determines your benefits with them as well) and you end up with a bunch of stuff no one in your group probably wants....like all the Hobbit/LoTR stuff.....

Set up a sign over your garage. Nothing says you cant open a store in your own home its just highly discouraged lol

Friend of mine owns a hobby store in DE, he is required to stock a minimum number of items. Not based on value but based on models/sets that GW is currently pushing, I cant remember the specific items. If he fails to keep the min stocked he losses his GW authorized retailer status.
