Well I left. Like a lot of people, gamesworkshop just rubbed me the wrong way... I didn't like the rules any more, the grognards were impossible to beat, and flyers screwed the game balance. I stopped having fun. I didn't like the direction towards big games with lots of jets, and I didn't like the special rules that everything started to get. So I left. And for a long time I hated the hobby. I badmouthed it, and sold most of my models. But then, I saw the fun again. One of my long time friends started talking to me about fluff, and I talked back. I remembered stuff that I thought was long dead, I started talking and didn't stop. Stories of gork and mork playing volleyball with nurgle, stories of large scale deception, and civil wars. I saw the fun again. I saw how happy he was talking about this thing I thought I hated. I realized how much I miss my friends. I missed the game. Things change, I see that now. Now I see that the hobby is just a way to connect to the other geeks, a way for grown men (and like one maybe 2 women) to push dolls around a table. Its not a competition. Its a means of communication and connection. A fun time to stand around and play yahtzee to see whose dolls died. A way to get people off the Tv and into the cellar to have a beer, and let the game ride.
there are people who ruin the spirit of the game. But I wont play dolls with them.
My name is austin, and I am back into the hobby that inspired my love of painting, science fiction, and oddly enough history. Here I am, a proud member of a community that loves something, and spends a little too much money for what they love. But I'm back people. And let me tell you, it was not an easy choice.
If you are thinking about leaving, make sure you are 100% positive you want to. And remember, things always change, people are always too competitive, and models always cost too much, but in the end, its all about fun and friendship.

This has gotten a little long hasn't it? Sorry for rambling, if you are still reading, you're better than I deserve.
I just wanted to share that with everyone. Let the fun-poking begin.

Your story isn't that uncommon, actually. A lot of people will take breaks from 40k (or whatever) in one form or another, for whatever reason. I, for example, started 40k again in 4th edition, and played until the beginning of 5th, and then took a complete break for a couple of years, and then came back towards the end of 5th, and played for a year, and then took time off for about nine months, and then came back for 6th, etc.

There are lots of reasons to leave, and lots of reasons to come back. Don't feel bad that you come and go and come back again. It happens to most people.

The reason I felt so bad is because while I played the first time around, I was so into the game that was all I ever talked about. I only played gw video games, and only read gw books. I was like addicted to the game. I was so afraid to come back because I was scared to be like that again.
but now I think I have it all worked out.

So it is pretty common for folks to leave? Interesting. Most of the guys I know have played without end since the 80s.

Its nice to know I'm not alone lol

Lots of people leave or take breaks, usually because of an edition just utterly ruined their playstyle and they didnt want to cope. Theres a lot of people that quit when 5TH was new that are starting to appear again now that its 6TH.

Just dont be that idiot that goes "I QUIT!" and immediately ebay's his/her entire 8000+ point army lol. You will never, ever get them back for remotely the price you sold them for, and if you ever want to come back youre going to shoot yourself in the foot lol.

If i ever quit, my most awesome looking models are going to be displayed around my computer and the rest are going to sit in a trunk for however long i dont wanna play lol.

You grew up.

I have quit lots of times. At least I learnt the lesson, not to sell get rid of stuff, because years later you may want to come back.

Welcome back, and hope you have a great time.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?
