Is it just me or does it look like you don't have much in the way of options on the new captain box? I am hoping they just put a picture on just one sprue of many or the old box will still be sold as well as the new one.

theres like no options outside of head swaps. As pretty as it is as a model i do not think it justifies a $30 price tag either. no other single model plastic costs that much. I just hope that is not a sign of things to come.

They didn't yank the SM commander plastic kit, which is customizable and almost ten USD cheaper. Get that instead.

Well i would get the "Space Marine Masters of the Chapter" or the Sternguard Kit and build a Custom Made Commander from there.

Im cheap enough i still use the AOBR commander, its a perfectly fine model with a very low price $5 or less on ebay) . I just put the ol' Ultra touch on it and used some fancy roman bits i got from maxi-mini and secret weapon

Damn.

Just looked at the model.

There really is next to nothing in the way of options.

The sword arm would be fairly easy to convert, but good luck with the combi bolter. That would take more effort than i'd be willing to put in, i think.

This, and the Librarian, are all massive fails on the pricing side. There's no way to justify that cost even compared to existing models and kits because they look ridiculously expensive even in comparison, never mind in a vacuum of information to an outsider.

(edited to exclude the Chaplain - I forgot that he only comes in a box that comes with a discount.)

It was a stupid idea on GW to make super expensive mono-pose characters. I really hope no one buys them.

If I'm right in thinking you can only get the Chaplain in the Reclusiam Command Squad that is full of models most SM players will already have is a bit of a fail. I'd imagine they'll release him separately later but I have Chaplains of all varieties coming out of my ears. I wasn't keen an all the flowing script on the Dark Apostle and I find this model as equally unappealing. The skull helm looks a bit cartoony for me also. The other head option wins for me.

With the Captain I agree the options are atrocious for £18, the 'old' Commander box is a clear winner. Whether or not they discontinue that line when they've sold out of their current stock remains to be seen but paying more for a less dynamic model with a really poor selection of options leaves only one sensible choice. The Commander box gives you loads of nice goodies for your bits box and I think is very reasonable price/plastic. The new Captain is also remarkably similar to the model from AOBR as already mentioned and you can grab one of them for dirt cheap.

Seems like a huge step backwards and in the wrong direction. Very disappointing. One word: WHY!!???

While they are singing "what a friend we have in the greater good", we are bringing the pain!

Sadly the popularity of space marines and the allure of plastic over finescat means thatt these kits are going to get GW lots of sales and £50 notes to roll into cannibis cigarettes .

It's rather curious. The new boxed sets, the Sternguard one especially, come loaded with bits. I'll stop short of calling them a "good deal", but by GW standards they're a steal. Something like 8 combi-weapons, two heavy weapons, four special weapons, and five "fancy" bolters, in a five model kit.

I guess they're trying to drive up their margins.

But honestly, you could convert a commander out of the Sternguard box, lol.

Then again, I convert everything, so perhaps my opinion is a bit slanted.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

I dunno, I like that model. I think the skull looks just sci-fi enough to work, and I also like the rest of the armor, in how it suggests cathedrals and gothic architecture. The flowing script reminds me of the scarves that preachers tend to wear.

All in all, I think the model is a good representation of 40k's aesthetic. Gothic Sci-Fi/Fantasy. Though I'm not sure how I feel about the bare head option. Aren't Chaplains supposed to keep their helmet on most of the time?

It's a shame since I like all three of the new plastic character kits, but I probably won't be getting any of them. The older captain kit is still a great set with tons of options, and while the sculpting quality is superior on the new one, I don't need another captain nor would I want him to have a combi-grav gun and a power sword. The Librarian is a lovely model though, and I really like Stabbums the Cyber-Baby.

There were bareheaded chaplains in 2nd ed and even further back. I'm pretty sure they should keep their helmets on, but woe betide anyone who tries to keep a Marine character's helmet on.

Worth mentioning they're $US30 and $AU30. If they're not jacking the AU price up any more, this must be about the limit for them. The Chinese/Russian recasters must be happy about GW continuing this ludicrous path of unjustified price rises, they'll be getting heaps more sales.

Yeah Multipart kit Commander is more expensive in Aus (by a fair margin). $37

The monopose plastic one is $30

With the amount of bits I have around I'd prob go for the Monopose and do some bashing on him.
