So here's my problem with thinning paints. Whenever I use them, there's a big droplet that forms wherever the brush lifts off from. Any ideas of what that might be?

Need more info,
What are you thinning with? What ratio? Is the droplet on the brush or the pallet?

Most likely too much load on the brush. Try touching the brush to the back of your thumb or to a piece of tissue to remove the excess paint from the brush before putting it to the model.
Thin paint flows FAST from the brush (so a little pressure on the bristles makes a lot more paint come out). Takes a little getting used to. This brush control is also the main difference between a wash (where you let the paint run) and a glaze (where you put it just where you want it).

Definitely sounds like an overloaded brush, to me. I had the exact same problem when I first started working with very dilute paints. Winterdyne said everything I would have wanted to, and far more concisely - just listen to him.

For more info, I'm thinning Reaper paints with distilled water to get to the consistency of skim milk.
I had been touching the brush to a paper towel to let it bleed a bit, but I hadn't really thought about the pressure I've been using. I definitely seem to like to press the brush against the surface, that's likely a contributing factor if not the main problem now that I think about it. I'll experiment in that vein, thanks a bunch!

GP goes over this in her new video at about 13 mins in here. Some other tips earlier in the video so might be worth watching more of it.
