It seems the vast majority of the products FW has been releasing these days is HH related. The models look beautiful & I think its awesome that the Primarchs are getting their own models. That said I will likely never get into or play 30k. One reason being, a great deal of the models are not compatible with 40k. (Great for conversions/modeling etc however) Either the technology was lost, the characters have died or what have you. Not to mention its extremely expensive. The biggest reason however is that unlike 40k, the events of the past are done. No matter the outcome, it doesn't change the present. In 40k, the fate of humanity hangs in the balance. The events to come are based off the outcomes of the present. Its unlikely the fluff will ever be updated to reflect said outcomes, but as the future is unknown the battles fought in 40k have a very real sense of survival & impact on the universe.

Do you play 30k? If not, why? What are your thoughts on the subject?

I haven't yet, but that will be my next army. It'll be mainly a painting/modelling project but I'm looking forward to see how it goes on the table top too.

It used to bother me playing battles "in the past" - ones that couldn't change the outcome. But I'm not bothered by it so much anymore. Part of this comes from my love of history (even if it is fictional). History is marked by events of astounding importance and many people wish they could be apart of them. Afterall, recreating historical battles is kinda the point of many strategy games - table-top, digital or otherwise. The fact that I can't change the outcome doesn't bother me. In fact, when my game ends the way I know it's meant to end I get feeling of closure.

Also - It's something entirely different. 30k is bigger. But not in the gimmicky apocalypse meaning of 'bigger'. You're reliving part of what created the 40k universe and in that sense it almost feels more important than a regular game of 40k.

Not that I don't love regular 40k, but I need a narrative to enjoy my games. Give me a campaign over a tournament any day.

I could see that. Being able to recreate a battle that plays out as it did in the fluff & actually have the dice cooperate would be pretty exciting. Playing with Primarchs would be awesome as well.

I have. Its actually not too diffeicult to add an hq and 1-2 units to an existing marine army and run it as 30k. Did that with my wolves and it was awesome.

The gameplay itself is quite fun.Marines feel like the monstrous super soldiers they should, and im a huge fan. You Dont know how hilarious a dual plasma wielding jump pack moritat is.

The forgeworld models are beautiful and have been a pleasure to paint.

I get what you are saying about finding it hard to immerse yourself in a game when the history behind it has already been determined. However, this logic basically makes all of your military history null as a subject of interest. Why would I play flames of war.... allies won. The same goes to watching a historical movie - there is no point as we already know the outcome.

The reason for getting into 30k is mostly for the painting and modelling aspect. Building a 30k army is almost a pilgrimage that each 40k fanboy must make once in their lifetime.

It is also important to remember that not every game played is going to be istvaan virus bombing, the drop site massacre, or siege of the imperial palace. The horus heresy spanned hundreds of engagements - many of which have no recorded outcome. Your heresy army could be partaking in one of these battle and technically you would be deciding the outcome as we have nothing telling us what actually happened.

Then would anyone want to play historical wargames?
