It seems by the fluff that Creed and Kell are seemingly never apart. But are they?
Would Creed deploy Kell to another officer as a guard/spy/advisor? Or would he take to the field himself without his retainer beside him?

Fluff-wise they are almost always together. Though it is possible that Creed occasionally has Kell in a different group. Rules-wise it is completely possible.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Yeah I know it's possible in the rules, hence the reason for checking in the fluff. Makes sense to keep your bodyguard close by but as your most trusted ally he would make a useful spy or enforcer imo

Well, I would presume they do not share a bed. One does not wipe for the other, I must infer...

Jokes aside, the way I would see it:

Creed would never go to battle without Kell. He'd probably stay miles away with binoculars or on board of a navy vessel or in a bunker somewhere watching a holo-map of the battle. It's safer, and why would he risk going into battle without his bodyguard to protect him? He's not gonna trust some guardsmen or some random officer with that job. Not worth it.

But Kell might go to battle without Creed.

Kell's a high ranking officer with tactical skills and seniority of his own, but he is also Creed's bodyguard. A general of creed's caliber, being only human, would likely not enter battle without his trusty aide de camp.

But I can see Kell working solo as well, being sent in first to check on the situation on the frontlines and such.

I always thought it was Kell following Creed around and keeping him alive, rather than Creed dragging Kell around.

they both met when they were conscripts, and they became BFF's after .

Kell was always the more gruntled and fierce fighter while Creed was a better tactician. So, while they have different roles, they function as one - Creed orders and causes random Chimeras filled with Vets to appear suddenly on the enemy's flanks while Kell protects him from harm and helps carry orders with loud shouts to the command squad.

Still, Lord General Castor is better - he can transform big metal boxes into Guardsman and Leman Russ tanks
