So I have recently bought a new spray gun and it seems to work just fine with wall paint. Now, I work at a paint store, meaning I can get a lot of paint in any colour imaginable. Here's my question though, can I use regular wall paint on my models, or is there something different about model paints?

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

You use hobby paints for models.
GW would want you to use citadel but there is a wide range of cheaper hobby paints out there. So I would advise to look around your self and find a good brand for you.
But if you want to follow paint guides you'll need citadel.
Same with brushes.
Hope this helps.

You can use any paint you like. They are your models.....

Most people use acrylic paints that are marketed as hobby paints. I would think that if you are able to thin the paints to the right consistency and they give you the results you are looking for than go for it.

I am also wondering what type of paints I should use. I am getting away from GW since I no longer agree with their business tactics. I wonder if many of the paints at Michaels would work

Reaper, Vallejo, P3 all have great paint lines. Like anything thing else some colors are better from some companies.....

Experiment and find what you like. I personally use Vallejo Game Color, Model Color and Air. Some P3 and a few Reaper HD stuff (mostly their flesh tones, as they are the best I have ever used.)

As Darefsky said, Reaper, Vallejo and P3 all have great paint lines, to which I'd add Army Painter and Minitaire. Should definitely use these hobby paint lines for your miniatures. Some people have success with the (much) cheaper craft acrylics, but they're generally more recommended for bulk use on terrain and such.

I also use predominantly Vallejo Game Colour (VGC) and Vallejo Model Air (VMA), with some Vallejo Model Colour (VMC) and Vallejo Liquid Gold (VLG). I also have the full Minitaire set because I got it at 50% off which was immense value for price per volume for a good airbrush ready vibrant fantasy/sci fi colour set.

Citadel and Vallejo have the most tutorials online. I'm fairly against citadel paints due to price/volume problems, regional pricing problems, and frequent changing of the lines for business reasons rather than improved formulas. If you plan to do a lot of airbrush work, Vallejo is generally your best bet as the droppers make it easy, and the VMA line come pre thinned so are easy to airbrush with (though even them you might want to thin a little more).

If you have the dosh to outlay to get yourself started, I'd recommend the VGC or VMA set, depending on if you want a vibrant sci-fi colour set with VGC or a more muted and realistic set for camo etc. which you'd get with VMA. To this you cherry pck from the Vallejo (and other) ranges colours you need to complete your collection for the schemes you'll need for your armies. You c ould also consider Minitaire if you can get it for 40-50% off still, though this range has some flaws, but I still really like it (*metallics are bad though). The Vallejo polyurethane primers (black, white, grey) are excellent value airbrush primers that usually come highly recommended, though they have a longer curing time and will save you a lot of money over spray can primers. VMA are the best airbrush metallics you'll find, and VLG are the best brush on metallics, though they're harder to work with due to being alcohol based.

A big selling point for Army Painter is the 100% match spray primers to their bottles of paints, so you can basecoat a nice vibrant colour as your primer and save a lot of time, and still be able to match the colour with the paints. Army Painter also have a great set of washes that match the old GW badab black and devlan mud iirc. Vallejo washes have much higher pigment density so need to be substantially thinned, which at least makes them much more cost effective if more troublesome to work with.

I'd avoid painting with craft, wall or house paints. They are formulated in a different manner to hobby paints and normally end up with larger pigments that make it harder to spray or destroy detail at the scale that we work at.

The other problem you can run into, is the binders are also normally larger and you can end up with long stringy parts in your paint. You can sieve them out though.

Elsewise, Citadel, Vallejo, P3, Reaper, Army painter, Tamiya, Humbrol are all out there and all exist. Its honestly worth not limiting yourself to one range and just select the paints that you will use for situations.
