LOS not being required has nothing to do with nightfight rules specifically disallowing targetting of units 36"+ away.

doesnt mean sneaky barrage users wont try it.

they also like to argue the "range" is 2.5 inches since it "comes from the center of the template" which is also wrong/cheating

If you want to barrage an enemy early in the game, one good idea is to have a unit with a searchlight deploy at the front of your deployment zone, move forward during the movement phase, and then use the searchlight during his shooting phase. The unit with barrage, if it shoots after the searchlight was used, may then fire away at the lit-up target.
