My take on a hordes-of-dudes Merovingian list.

Chasseur snipers are unusual to say the least! I'd drop the moblot and bring another loup. Moving the lgl into the second combat group to give you a back up link team once the metros fail. What's the point of a horde list, if you can't have multiple links to play with!

You could reduce the snipers to mine layers or FOs to spot for the lgl or extra camo markers to really disguise where people are! The swc saved could get you an extra metro hmg for more link team horror. If you can coordinate a horde movement well, it can be off-putting for an opponent who isn't expecting so many orders on the board!

The idea behind the chasseur snipers is I really like their AP sniper rifle. Good call on the loup-garou link team, I've been trying to get rid of the moblot but aren't sure what to replace him with. Give me a sec

Are link teams a vital part of Infinity now? Ironbovin and I feel like it is a step towards the 40K-fication of the game, we've been a bit hesitant to use them.

I'm not doubting the advantages, it just seems very powerful and a different game mechanic.

Not really, link teams can be countered with some thought. Its just that if you are running a sectorial list, especially a horde list you can really get order efficient by using the linked movement.

But aren't we moving away from "classic" small force, covert action?

I see Link Teams to be the epitome of "classic", small force action. You've got a guy, the link leader, moving aorund doing things being covered by his buddies. They're professional enough that when needed, they can break and go do their own thing then link back up and keep moving as a team.

It's hardly moving towards '40k style' games, since they don't even behave like squads in 40k. The game with Link teams is still about small covert action, Link teams just give you a different way to coordinate several models at once..

To get even close to 40k gaming, you have to field something like 43 Volunteers with Chain rifles (or what ever the unit is @ 6pts a model)

The restriction via SWC ensure it can never really become '40k' Plasma cannon heavy terminator whatever, basically the stuff you'd expect to see on a battlefield.

To stop the Volunteer spam, most people place an unofficial 2 Combat group max in there games (its certainly something I have seen a lot on the forums) so at most, you'll only see 20 models, or 2 squads in action.

Loki has summed up the link team idea very well.

Finland

Biggest 300 point army:

Caledonia, 49 models:

Group 1
Volunteer Lt
9 x Volunteer chain

Group 2
10 x Volunteer chain

Group 3
10 x Volunteer chain

Group 4
10 x Volunteer chain

Group 5
9 x Volunteer chain

Second place goes to Neoterra with 21 x Auxilia (42 models)

Neither of those armies does anything. Chain Rifles can't hurt ARM 4+ models while Auxilia are just too easy to kill.

So yes, while it is possible to make a big army, it does not mean you should. Most armies try to play with 10 models max, while some try to get 16+ (Caledonia, Merovignia, possibly Acontecimento). Caledonia and Merovignia because they don't have Tank Hunters or Veteran Kazaks and their own heavy/costly troops are either sub-par or they can't take them enough to link them or they can't link at all.

Forever a pone.
