So, getting ready to assemble my first batch in my horde of Genestealers, and I have been looking at upgrades. My question is what is the best option for cost effective use? My main point of concern is upgrading them to have scything talons on top of the standard toxin sac and adrenal gland upgrades.

"There is a cancer eating at the Imperium. With each decade it advances deeper, leaving drained, dead worlds in its wake. This horror, this abomination, has thought and purpose that functions on an unimaginable, galactic scale and all we can do is try to stop the swarms of bioengineered monsters it unleashes upon us by instinct. We have given the horror a name to salve our fears; we call it the Tyranid race, but if is aware of us at all it must know us only as Prey."

At the moment just Toxin Sacs or no upgrades at all are the best ways to run them, all that could change with the new codex though.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

"Long ago in a distant land, I, M'kar, the shape-shifting Master of Chaos, unleashed an unspeakable evil! But a foolish Grey Knight warrior wielding a magic sword stepped forth to oppose me. Before the final blow was struck, I tore open a portal in space and flung him into the Warp, where my evil is law! Now the fool seeks to return to real-space, and undo the evil that is Chaos!"

Yup, I wouldn't even glue the arms on, let alone equip them with anything else, until the new codex arrives. (If you're really paranoid, don't even stick the heads on, in case head upgrades become

Tactically, I'd run them with no upgrades in the meantime - keep 'em cheap. Unless the Ymgarl version appeals.

Toxin Sacks have always served me well on Genestealers (when you do manage to get them into combat), increasing their killing potential enormously (huge difference between S3 and S4 when it comes to poison, and a second go at getting a Rending hit is great).

Leave the other upgrades at home though.

Point for point, toxin sac stealers have the best killing power, but you trade bodies for it, meaning the resiliency of the unit is worse. In 6th edition, if you are going to run stealers, you need all the resiliency you can get.

Scything talons and no toxin sacs work too. Can still destroy vehicles and rend on a six. Thats how I run mine.

I ran mine with toxin sacs and a brood lord in 5th. 4+ cover and 4+ FNP made them worth it.

However, in 6th I'm probably going to take 17-20 with no upgrades at all. I really want to take the broodlord but the points aren't there... honestly, can you imagine shutting down a wraithknight, dreadknight or a riptide with him?

Also, implant attacks wouldn't be terrible for him... you'd be shooting for ID'ing one of the big monsters out there these days.
