Food for a Giant Fenrisian Wolf

I have been playing for just a few years and the space wolfs were my first army, I have been tinkering with a list that I hope will give me a general and balanced army for competition playing. Any comments would be great.

HQ - wolf lord with thunderwolf mount, frost axe, stormshiled and wolftooth necklace

Tropps - 3x6 greyhunter squads with plasma gun each plus 3 razorbacks, 2 with TL heavy bolter 1 with TL lascannon

heavy - 6 man long fangs squad with 5 missile launchers

fast attack - swiftclaw bikers squad with attack bike and heavy bolter
2 man thunderwolf with plasma pistol and melta bomb each

My general idea is that the Wolf lord and thunderwolf squad charge ahead and take care of any heavy hitters or troops, the swiftclaws will range ahaead and take out or whittle down any objective taking troop while the greyhunters will move forward to deny any objectives with the razorbacks chipping away at anything that could be a danger to my troops. the lascannon and long fangs will concentrate on the long range fire support and heavy hitters.

Played this army against a nid army and it did well, it didn't do so well in a 3 way battle between dark elder and DA space marines but I was last and in between the two armies.

I would like to be playing in leagues but I am not entirely sure if this army will be enough.

Any thoughts?

I'm glad you've had fun with the list, but for a league I would put money on it being out classed. Some thoughts for a more competitive list:

1) The wolf lord sets you back quite a lot of points, and is a CC monster in an edition where CC is not something you really want to be doing. (Remember, SW are best for close range shooting, not actual assaulting most of the time). I would consider rune priests as a cheaper and more competitive alternative. They can be used in a variety of roles, and are a much better investment. Remember, they still have the best anti-psyker wargear in the game. You can take 2 basic ones for the same price as your wolf lord.

2) Claw units are the worst units in the codex. They are pretty much out-shined by anything else. (Blood claws are a complete joke when compared to grey hunters for example). Whilst thunderwolves are more expensive, I would consider more of them instead of the bikes if you really want a hard hitting fast moving CC unit. (If you really want bikes then consider allying with the new codex SM and run them as whitescars).

3) Plasma pistols are worthless nearly 99% of the time. They are expensive and do nothing for almost all of the game. I would remove them and make the thunder wolves as cheap as possible (Melta bombs might be ok, but remember you have 5 rending strength 5 attacks which you forgo for that 1 melta bomb. A lot of the time it will be better just to use your normal attacks on anything which is not T9 or a landraider. This will give you 30-40 points which can be better used.

Hope that helps.

plasma pistols on grey hunters are useless??

A standard plasma gun in a squad of grey hunters is 5 points less than a pistol. A second plasma gun in a 10 man squad is free. Why spend your points on the pistol?

It doesn't put out much damage, will probably only fire one shot before melee and is as expensive as another marine.

Lastly, grey hunters don't have sergeants, so you cannot even hope for a str 7 ap2 precision shot.

Is it worthless? .......No.......but there are much better things for your points in almost every circumstance.
