Hello everyone, with the release of the new Space Marine codex I am deadset on creating a Drop Pod heavy army. Now origionally I was set on doing a Salamander Space Marine army, however a modeling idea left over from last edition that I had came to light. Basically I would model my Space Marines as ODST looking guys utilizing a combination of Pig Iron Heads Scout bodies along with with the Umbra Ferrox Pattern Bolters from Forgeworld. Just want to see what you guys think of this idea in regards to how it relates to the rules, the game itself and fluff wise. As usual with all my threads feel free to post any thoughts, ideas or comments. Thanks again guys!

Beware, Wall of Text.

Spoiler:
Chapter Name:

-Iron Dragons

Chapter Colors:

-Matt Black, Grey, Blue Visors

Battle Cry:

-"Iron and Flame!"

Tactics and Favorite Weapons:

-Drop Pod and Ship Boarding Specialists
-Special Weapon: Meltagun
-Heavy Weapon: Heavy Flamer

Strength:

-549 Marines split between 4 Companies
-A "Claw" of Marines consists of a Drop Pod of x10 Marines

Backstory:

The "Iron Dragons" were a later founding of the Imperial Fists who specialized in Drop Pod Assaults and Space Borne Operations. Because of this their initiates and scouts became well versed in the ways of the Drop Pod and as part of their initiation, would have to take part in a minimum of 100 Drops wether in training or even in combat to even be considered a canidate to become a full Space Marine. Because of this the Chapters Techmarines had modified their scouts armor despite protestations from Mars, making it tougher and more durable then other Space Marine chapters Scout Armor so they could survive Drop Poding into combat or utilizing the Casteus Assault Ram in ship boarding actions.

When the Best returned to Armageddon the entire Iron Dragons Chapter answered the call to aide the besieged planet. It was here during the Armageddon Campaign that almost the entire Chapter was lost and made what the Iron Dragons are today. While the majority of the Chapter was engaged in Space boarding actions the 10th Company had been deployed to Armageddon Prime around Death Mire aiding in the defense there. When High Marshall Helbrecht and his Crusade withdrew battered and bloody from within the depths of the Space Hulk Malevolent Dread, the Iron Dragons Flagship the "Calw of Dron" and Fortress Monestary, already severly crippled, sacraficed itself covering his escape before being forced to crash into a massive Ork Rok and detonating its Plasma Core, taking nearly all of the Chapters armor, vehicles and weapons with it.

The 10th company even after hearing what had occured continued to fight on Armageddon until the Season of Fire errupted, effectively ending all the fighting across the planet. At that point what remained of the Chapter took stock of what resources they could and decided then and there to attempt to rebuild and continue fighting on as the Iron Dragons thanks to the help of multiple other Chapters, in particular the Black Templars who along with a handful of their initiates gave them a "Gladius" class ship to the cause of rebuilding the chapter. Due to nearly losing all their Power Armor the Iron Dragons began to mass produce the custom sets of armor that they already wore and to this day still utilize that very same set of armor.

I like the idea a lot, mainly because I am a HUGE fan of the ODST's and the ODST look that you can do with the conversions. Not a super fluff Nazi but I would have to say that its a pretty cool and a unique backround story (at least from what I have seen) and its not something that contradicts other fluff as after looking into the Helbrecht story it makes no mention of the details of his escape so it fills a nice void in the story. And as long as your stuff is WYSIWYG in terms of weaponry I don't see any problem, please post pictures though when your done!

I am in this hobby for the narrative. Every game has a purpose to me.... a story.
So a strong story driven chapter that makes sense is an A++ in my book. Bravo.

Post pics asap

An interesting and rather grim back story - I like it.
As I too possess a custom Chapter, descended from sons of Dorn, I salute thee, brother!

Running scout bodies as PA marines might be a bit weird, especially if you also run scouts. If you use the black templar chapter tactics, you can put crusader squads in drop-pods, with 5 initiates and 5 neophytes. Maybe model the PA initiates as scouts with big boarding shields or something?

The fluff sounds good. Fun even. I'd suggest you splash in some color some where. Red weapons will look good. I would do your armor in leadbelcher with a wash, Super easy to paint that way. Then paint the arms and sholder pads black, Do mix of red/black on the back packs and trim everything else is bronze. You can use the salamanders transfers for the dragons logo. You can also use the salamanders tactics and a counts as vulkan to maximize your weapon theme. A buddy of mine runs a salamanders drop army and droping flamers is, well lets just say fun.

Should look real sharp.

I wont be taking any scouts so everything in Scout Armor will be representing my standard Marines in Power Armor clearing up any confusion, going with the rule "Everything looks the same and there is nothing to contradict it" rule. BTW I found a pic of what I want my guys to turn out, tell me what you guys think and thanks again for the advice!

Well the fluff I created was to cover why they look the way they do.
