Had this come up in a tournament yesterday.

My chaos lord with a power fist fights a veteran sergeant with a power fist, so we strike simultaneously.

I issue a challenge, he kills me and I kill him.

How cinematic! How epic! How heroic! Let's roll on the champion of the gods table anyway to see what I would have gotten as my reward.

And I rolled....chaos spawn! The gods are displeased!

But now wait a minute....it says replace The Lord with a spawn. We checked the table and it says to roll immediately, not at the end of the phase or anything. So does he become a spawn and is therefore alive, denying slay the warlord and now out of combat or is he dead?

We rolled off and said he was still alive as a spawn but I'm actually quite curious.

He is dead by the time the boon happens.

There is no effect as there is nothing to replace. (Because you have removed the lord as a casualty).

You have to resolve the wound before you can roll on the chart. Seeing as how the two sides resolve at the same initiative, the opponent resolves also.

The Chaos Lord is dead.

On a side note, why are you running a PF on your Lord? That's just asking to lose him (as you did).

Because there's no AP2 weapons in the chaos armoury I can use with the mark of slaanesh?

He's on a bike, so I don't die from just one pfist wound.

Now why does he have to be just "dead, nothing else"? Once a model loses its last wound it is immediately removed as a casualty. He also must "immediately" roll on the boon table and apply the result.

Is this a case of current player's turn gets to choose the order?

It is not a question of order, as you remove casualties before immediately rolling on the table.

So you remove both characters then you roll on the table, and by that time there is nothing to replace.

It's resolved immediately after the model is killed. So since you both attack at initiative 1 you both die and there is no boon. The only way you could have pulled that off is if he was at Initiative 0 which would only be in the case of you assaulting a tank or something.

No dual wield with a lighting claw?, on a slaaneshi lord those are 4 attacks that reroll to wound at I6 against a lone sergeant if you paid VotLW you might even re-roll to hit.

Lightning Claws aren't AP2.

Last time I checked veteran sergeants saved on 3+, I guess if you want to make sure he doesn't save at all with his power armor you can use the AP2 weapon instead of the AP3... just to make sure.

Edit: note it says dual wield with a lightning CLAW (single) not lighting CLAWS (plural), which means power fist AND lighting claw to avoid getting hit by power armored power fists.
