Ok my first attempt at an Imperial astral claws force.

Hq choices are a double act of level 2 librarian's , one with the armour indomitous and the other with a combiweapon, they both have force axes and teleport homers. The elite choices are two squads of terminators, one with thunder hammers and storm shields, the other has storm bolters and an assault cannon. The troop choices are a five man squad with a grav gun, sarge has a chainsword/axe, and combi grav riding a lazcannon razorback. One ten man squad with plasma cannon, melta gun, grav pistol. Another 9 man squad with a heavy bolter, flamer, and a lightning claw and plasma pistol in a rhino. Heavy support comes from a five man squad of centurions with 1 lascannon, two grav cannons, and two heavy bolters. All of which will be joined by a thunderfire cannon (if it comes in the post). All of which comes to 1846

I'm picturing the librarians getting as far forward as possible in the rhino and razorback. Then the other squad either camps on backfield objectives or provides some screening for the centurians while the thunderfire rains death from above . The only question is which chapter tactics is it best to go for. I'm leaning towards Imperial Fists? What have I gone overboard with?

Any suggestions would be greatfully received as I usually play Chaos marines and this is quite a different beasty

Sorry, its still a force of habit to write in paragraphs, too many years of dealing with English Teachers . Its pretty much as Feasible listed except the 10 man tactical squad has a plasma cannon, flamer and a grav pistol on the sarge.

Why is the armour indomitous bad? It certainly reads well

Why are terminators bad? Certainly with Chaos Termicide squads are handy threats to have and the teleport homer's on the librarians should make them 'safer' to use

I realise some of the choices might be 'weird' but it was often a case of what have I got in the collection which isn't obviously a chaos marine. Hence the plasma pistol and lightning claw on the third sergeant model, though I thought that would provide some decent close combat coverage for a squad that will probably be sitting on its own in the back of the deployment area.

I totally agree that the centurions have a conflicted role. However I figured that the lascannon on the sergeant would provide some much needed anti-tank while the heavy bolter's would mop up any horde units. I fully admit the grav cannons are there purely for the fun of it .

Again I really appreciate any insights as this is only my second army, and its very different from the Nurgle/Heldrake spam I usually go for

terminators have a bad rep atm due to the fact of their high price and that everyone is spamming plasma weapons (ap2) in the current meta (and soon to be spamming grav guns ... pew pew). I play DA / SW ... my advice if you are just starting out is to pick up this as a basis.

a librarian HQ

x4 10 man tactical squads, keep the sergeants bare bones and 1 special / 1 heavy weapon (honestly x2 melta gun / multi melta, x2 plasma gun / missile launcher, after you get the hang of the army move on to grav guns) ... redundancy is always good in 40k.

2-4 dedicated tranports (rhinos or razorbacks - TL las or las / plas) ... redundancy is always good in 40k.

x2-3 heavy support slots (centurions, vindicators, thunderfirecannons) whichever you pick take 2 ... redundancy is always good in 40k.

based around this list you have a solid core of an army that you can add anything to and be semi-competitive.

not sure on armour indomitous but keep your hq low on points.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
also don't take combi-weapons on a libby ... they are going to be casting not shooting.

The armour is overcosted. The Libby is a support HQ. He doesn't need to be a beatstick with fancy armour. Keep him cheap.

Actually I was going to put him in the razorback with a teleport homer so that the termies wouldn't scatter.
