My friend says his codex says that his Grots take on thettoughness of the artillery which makes them t7. I don't have an ork codex and my friend is relatively new to 40k.
So my question is to you: can/are Grots toughness 7? It just sounds pretty far fetched to me.

It'd indeed correct. The idea is that you're shooting at the guns. They're back at T2 in combat.

Artillery rules in the BRB, ork codex has nothing to do with it.

Artillery crew are considered T7 as long as any artillery is still around. Im assuming they did that so it wasnt unfair for majority toughness single crew single gun units since Kannon Batteries are 1 gun 2 crew (or 4 if you buy the additional crew).
However in combat the guns are treated as non-existent, so the toughness bonus goes byebye.

Oh ok. I just pulled out the book and you guys are right. thank you.
In the artillery entry, where does it say the toughness is null in combat. I get the feeling this will come up in our game.

Oh its different because one section is called shooting at artillery where it states the guns toughness is used.

The assault section of artillery doesn't say anything about toughness. Thank you for the help guys.

p46 Artillery - Only against shooting attacks grants the toughness 7 , this would include things like Flame Template weapons. Things like the Grot Prod would affect gretchins at a toughness 2. because the toughness is only mentioned in the shooting attacks, if this was for melee, then they would have stated that either at the beginning of the section or in both the shooting and assault sections - it does not, so when assaulting and artillery unit they are back to their original toughness.

I did learn that Artillery can move. Though if you have 3 guns in the unit you would need at least 3 crew members to move. It also doesn't say that they are slow and purposeful, so I guess they can run as well.

Also it seems that if the Gun is the closest model during a shooting attack it will take the wound from the wound pool.
