So, my brother came over with his fancy new super-macro lens (used for taking close ups of the eyes of insects, for example). This thing is crazy, and we had a bit of a play around with my 40k models to see what we could do with it. Some nice results.

Tell you what though, under that kind of zoom, paint jobs start looking pretty nasty...! There are *lots* of photos in the discard pile... Didn't have time to take that many, but hopefully will get another chance later.

What we found we could do was capture some of the character of the actual beings the models represent, rather than just featuring the models like regular showcase photos. Really got up close and personal with these guys.

Enjoy!

Oh man, I foresee some great photos using this method like some wicked battle shots with opposing figures! I like the pictures nice job.

A Heretic may see the truth and seek redemption. He may be forgiven his past and will be absolved in death. A Traitor can never be forgiven. A Traitor will never find peace in this world or the next. I like the lictor one the most. Very creepy.

Looks pretty neat. I'd love to get that close to my models, but I'd be afraid for the resulting images!

Yup.

Gotta say though, at that kind of zoom, there's very little in the way of manual highlighting that holds up as well as that kind of drybrushing

Ya I really love the Tyrrannofex. Did him quickly outdoors (hence the weird background...!); we initially thought the models would be way too big, but that head looked awesome. If anything, the painting method has added detail at that level of zoom...!

I love the lighting on those up-close pictures. Makes the nids look much scarier - I feel like that's how they would look if you were actually on a ship that was under attack or something.
