I know shoulder pad for dark angels are meant to be left green. But i painted mine gold do you think this would still look alright?

Sure, why not. If you like the way it looks, run with it.

There is a lot of variance, even in pure codex compliant chapters on how to paint stuff.

If someone gives you grief, tell them your detachment changed their shoulders to commemorate some campaign, or honor some ally they fought beside, or something like that. It happens a good deal.
