so I made a small starter space marine list for playing with my brother and friends. Anyway straight to it.

Chaplain
-jump pack
105

Assault squad (5 marines)
-flamer
90

Tac squad (5 marines)
-flamer
-rhino
110

Tac squad (5 marines)
70

Devastator squad (5 marines)
-lascannon
-missile launcher
-heavy bolter x2
125

Ok thats the list. Its using the new codex costs. I still have no idea which chapter tactics to go with though. Any thoughts? Thanks

How many troops per squads? With the difference in Dev armorment maybe Ultra. Although I am partial to IF CT.

Its a game, have fun. If you arent for some reason...find a new one.

Whoops, forgot. Edited

Also, the dev squad can be changed as needed. I just put down those weapons as a (hopefully) well-rounded unit

Meh, I'd drop the heavy bolters on the Devvy squad. that drops 20 points. I'd add Melta bombs to the Sgt.,A flamer to the assault squad, and a Heavy bolter to the Tac without a transport.

I think devastators are best with a dedicated role - decide what they will be used against, and kit accordingly. Otherwise, half of the time a few of your weapons will be sub-optimal. Though, maybe @ 500 pts this isn't as much of an issue. Your load out looks like Ravenguard would be of good benefit here; Then again, Ultramarines is always a good rounded out choice which you would still benefit from.

Ok, made some changes to the list.

Librarian (not sure what power to take yet)
65

Tac squad (5 marines)
-meltagun
-Veteran Sergeant
-power weapon
*-melta bombs
-Razorback transport
160/*165

Tac Squad (6 marines)
-Missile Launcher
*-Heavy Bolter
99/*94

Assault Squad (7 marines)
-2 plasma pistols
Sergeant
-plasma pistol
-power weapon
174

Total 498 points. Either take a heavy bolter in tac squad 2 and melta bombs in tac squad 1 OR missile launcher in tac squad 2 and no melta bombs in tac squad 1

Thanks

They do, I would go pyro on that libby since the unit looks more assault-y. Pyromancy has a nice primaris.

I would drop all the power weapons, or at least the one from your tactical squad. Take a las cannon in the second squad. Might as well go all out. And dropping the power weapon gives this to you.

I would also say you should use the imperial fist chapter tactic. It is a huge force multiplier at this small a level.

my advice is Play what models you like, then worry about winning later after you have learned how to play, I have a huge Dread Mob that most people comment, "fun, especially if you like losing." Well I kick ass with that army, only lost maybe twice and one battle was a draw. but my point is once you learn how to play you can get a better feel for what models work well in which situation. Don't worry about having a winning list right out of the gate.

I also 2nd playing what you like, because in the end what matters is you have fun. I have my Assault Marines I bring here and there. Yeah they may not be the best unit around, but I really enjoy using them. I thought about running a small assault squad like you have (3 plasma pistols). It's probably a good call to fit in those 2 extra models so you have some wounds you can soak before losing the plasma pistols. These days though, even marines in the open get plastered, so ... an extra two bodies may not matter.
