Hello all,

As the title suggests I was wondering what all of your opinions are regarding fielding units such as Aegis with one of the Gun Emplacements or certain flyers like Hell Blades/Drakes in games at this points value. I'm trying to determine all round competetive lists for my first army before I invest in purchasing any models. Of course I will be acting within the rules of the game when I take these things, however I want to have fun too. It's not necessarily something that would be overpowered, but I don't want to pick something that would be frowned upon.

So is it 'OK' to use a Hell Blade in a 500 points game? Heldrakes in 750 point games? Quad Guns that can reach almost everything on a smaller gaming board and force the opponents hand?

Regards,
Op

It's hard to make the game 'competitive' at 500-750 pts, because some armies have cheap and powerful toys and others don't.

When I play at those low points we usually restrict ourselves to infantry/bikes/jump infantry only. With maybe 1 tank/dreadnought.
Usually no special characters either.

With smaller games, you tend to need more infantry.

It's why Orks are so good at small games.

I played in a campaign where you had to build your army from the Allies FOC at 750.

It was really competitive with all kinds of lists being brought up.

It's how a go about army building for the core.

One HQ
Two Troops
0-1 Elites.
0-1 Fast Attack.
0-1 Heavy Support.

I tend to use the old Combat Patrol/40k in 40 minutes rules for games of that size.

Minimum of 1 Troop choice
Hq is 0-1,
Armor total not over 32 (front, side, and rear added together),
Maximum of 2 wounds on models,
No 2+ Armour Saves.

It makes for some really good fun games, I've actually played quite a few tournaments that used this format, and they went very well.

If the thought of something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds, I am to assume that I am not allowed to do it.

Oh, I believe that No Flyers and No fortifications are reasonable restrictions at this points level.

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

3 rules...

1. No one model may cost more than 25% of the total army points(wargear, fortifications, and transports included)

2. No one unit may cost more than 50% of the total army points(transports excluded)

3. No fliers until 1000pts

I just ran an escalation and these were the rules we used, plus no fliers and no 4+ inv, no more than 2 wounds on anyone EXCEPT your warlord. It actually worked really well and ended up being fairly competitive, until someone brought 5 piranhas, min fire warriors and a commander with drone controller... 10 twin linked bs 5 pulse carbines kind of out cheesed just about everyone.
