Howdy all. All these supplement books for 40k have got me thinking about what role they play in most people's hobby. I myself own none of them as I think negatively of them, but my opinion is colored as I view them like day 1 dlc for video games, aka content that should have been included in the initial release instead of a separate charge.

So since my opinion in the matter can't be trusted, I wanted to see how the community feels. This is quite pertinent to the tournament scene mostly to prepare opponents who bring supplement armies how much they need to explain if it turns out no one has access to the rules, and for players who don't know the rules to see possible abuse situations where maybe they are alone in not having read the supplement rules.

I'll start by saying that despite owning most, and having read and retaining a good portion of all the current army books, I have not fully read a single one of the supplement rules sections. All my knowledge of them comes from word of mouth, aka either a review I saw on the Internet or an opponent simply stating what does what. If my opponent was playing a rule wrong or glossing over important details like his weapon only works in a challenge I could easily get blindsided, just to be shown the rule half way through the game past the point when I made decisions. While yes I could have asked to see his supplement ahead of time, a tourney environment does not allow for enough time to fully read my opponents supplements before the game begins to double check all the modifications the supplement may have made.

As an aside, I am not trying to bash supplements with this poll. I already know I am prejudiced against them, for good or bad, but I also know people that love them and own all of them. Instead, I am hoping for this to be a fact finding mission to see how many people are actually familiar/have access to them.

I personally don't mind the supplements TOO much, but would prefer them to be a bit more substantial rules wise for the price or to be included in their current incarnation in the relevant codex, or as a combined supplement (i.e. Codex Traitor Legions instead of Codex Black Legion).

I haven't been inspired to buy any of the supplements so far, as the only one relevant to me (Iyanden) doesn't appeal as I don't play a heavy Wraith troop Eldar army.

I will likely pick up the Iron Warrior supplement if they make one though.

I am mostly keen for a bit more IW fluff outside of Black Library material (which I have read a lot of the IW stuff already).

Chaos Space Marines - Iron Warriors & Night Lords 7900pts

My option is not up there.

I own The Farside Supplements, I've read Iyanden, I have yet to see black legion.

IMO the ammount of rules in these books is minimal, and as such they are no big deal (as of now they have no new units, just wargear changes etc) so if you know what the units do in the standard codex all you need do is check the new options.

Now, I'm not a big fan with the allying with yourself mechanic, but it is what it is.

I'd get the black legion supplement....if it was in paper yet.

I prefer books to phones when it comes to rules.
I have the Iyanden supplement, I enjoyed reading it.

I used to buy every codex, but at £30 a time I've been priced out of that. Now I only buy codex's I need. The same extends to supplements.

Its because ordinance is still a word.
However, firing ordinance at someone isn't nearly as threatening as firing ordnance at someone.
Ordinance is a local law, or bill, or other form of legislation.
Ordnance is high caliber explosives.
No 'I' in ordnance.
Don't drown the enemy in legislation, drown them in explosives.

I would get the Farsight Enclaves supplement ... if it was the hardcover version. I can't really get those e-reader format books right now. So no all-battlesuits tau for me at the moment.

Dark Angels- 7500 pts
Tau- 5000pts
Chaos Daemons- 3000/2000 pts
Dark Eldar(allies)- 1500 pts

I own all of them on the ipad and they are all a waste of money. Luckily you can find iTunes cards for up to 50% off and you don't feel bad anymore when you share the screen shots with all your friends.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

I play orks, and currently my codex is the neglected xenos crapfest of 40k with my dumpy 4th edition codex. I only own my own codex and rules I can use.

I have no problem with more rules, it is easy enough to be exposed to them and the person who uses them needs to share them pre-game. I am pretty good at math hammer so I feel comfortable being able to adjust to a new unit based upon reading the rules and knowing the statline.
