I found a previous thread on this, but it wasn't fully explored.

Asurmen's Hand of Asuryan rule grants him D3 warlord traits generated from the Codex: Eldar table.

The Iyanden warlord traits are ruled thusly:
"An Iyanden Warlord may roll on the Warlord traits table presented here, instead of those... in codex eldar."

If I take Asurmen as the warlord of an Iyanden list, he is an Iyanden Warlord.

His rule says "generate your traits from here".

Iyanden rule says "you may generate traits from here, instead of there".

Can I choose? Or am I restricted to Codex: Eldar traits.

Bonus question: If i can choose, can I mix and match?

Restricted to the Codex ones, unfortunately. That's the cost of being the first supplement.

Based on what?

A normal Eldar Warlord can roll on the Eldar table or those in the BRB.
A normal Iyanden Warlord can roll on the those listed above or the Iyanden table.
Asurmen has a special rule that limits his rolls to Codex: Eldar (specific>general).

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Hmm.

That's pretty convincing.

I'm not totally convinced though - Asurmen does X (and indeed, is required to, as opposed to being able to use the BRB).

When he's an Iyanden warlord though, he is allowed to do Y, specifically instead of X.

Although, re-reading, his rule is more specific than i thought it was before.

"If your primary detachment includes Asurmen, he must be your Warlord. When determining warlord traits for Asurmen, he always has D3 traits from the Eldar Warlord Traits table".

I still think it'd be specifically allowed to use Iyanden's traits... but i wouldn't play it that way against anyone who wasn't the most giant git ever.

You left off the next couple words, which specify what page the specific warlord trait table he's allowed to roll on. This is probably missing (and replaced with a hyperlink) on e-versions, though.
