Can independent characters join Monstrous Creatures?

If the monstrous creature is capable of having more than one model in the unit, yes. If the unit can only ever consist of one model, no.

Do I have to pay for the drone or can the IC just join the unit without the upgrade?

Thanks in advance!

It does not need to buy the drone, it just simple needs the ability to not only ever be a single model unit

Where does this "ICs can't join MCs" thing come from? I keep seeing this topic come up. Is it because most MCs are single model units?

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

Yes, and a single model unit can't be joined by ICs, unless it has the option for more models. So you can add a IC to that Carnifex, but your Tyranofex is forever alone.

I can't recall exactly but I think in 5th edition MCs were outright banned from being joined by ICs (may be wrong on this).

In 6th the wording is something along the lines of 'no single model units, like most MCs'. That's why many people think of MCs.

I remember Tyranid Primes joining Carnifex broods, so I don't think so.

That could be it.

They were MCs, they aren't any more. and they've been in broods of 1-3 for a while now.

That's because they have a special rule in their codex to do so.

In 5ed, IC's could not join MCs at all because the BRB said so.

No they don't... There is no such rule in the codex.

From the 5th edition rulebook:
"They cannot, however, join vehicle squadrons and units that always consist of a single model (like most vehicles and monstrous creatures)."

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

Incorrect on both points.
