I I take multiple infantry squads that blob up, can I place the blobed up squad in reserve while deploying any Heavy Weapons teams?
They are a separate unit for all intents and purposes - correct?

Correct, separate units.
However I think there is a requirement to deploy them all, or reserve them all. Should be under the platoon rules...

The army list mentions something like "Make a single reserve roll for the whole platoon", leading me to think that you place the platoon as a whole in reserves, you can't split it.

Each section of the Platoon is it's own unit. As such, they can either all be deployed, all reserved (assuming you have enough room) or split between the two. When rolling for reserves, all sections not embarked in a non-dedicated transport are rolled together.

In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I would advise to contact your tournament organizer in order to be certain, as they might view the matter in a different way to the people here.

Not separate units. Unless a squad is deployed on a non-dedicated transport, a platoon and all of its constituent parts are one unit for deployment purposes. Or somebody could just read the first page of the imperial guard errata/ FAQ entries.

Each Infantry Platoon is deployed in place of a
single unit in missions that limit the number units that can be
deployed.
This tells us that if a mission restricts what can be deployed (for example you can only deploy 1 HQ unit and 2 Troop units), the entire platoon counts as a single unit.
In addition when making a reserve or outflanking
roll, roll once for the whole Infantry Platoon.
If the platoon is in reserves (or Outflanking) the whole platoon comes in on one reserve/outflank roll (instead of rolling for each unit individually as is normally the case).
Any units in
reserve that are embarked upon a non-dedicated transport are
instead rolled for separately.
Finally, if a unit is embarked in a non-dedicated transport (such as a Valkyrie (or Vendetta can never remember which is which)) then they are excluded from the above roll.
Unless you can point to a rule that says they are one unit for all deployment purposes.

From the errata
Page 96 – Infantry Platoon, second sentence
Change to: “Each Infantry Platoon is deployed in place of a single unit in missions that limit the number units that can be deployed. In addition when making a reserve or outflanking roll, roll once for the whole Infantry Platoon. Any units in reserve that are embarked upon a non-dedicated transport are instead rolled for separately.”
All missions limit the number of units that can be deployed except apocalypse. Unless you are deploying flyers and drop pods before the game. I Don't see any scenarios that do what you are mentioning. So yeah, if you are using a mix of old rules with new rules with whatever, then it makes sense that you would continue to use old IG rules too.
The real rub is the line "in addition, when making a reserve or outflanking roll, roll once for the WHOLE Infantry platoon." Notice that it doesn't say the parts of a platoon placed in reserve.
The only exception made is to parts of a platoon that are embarked on a dedicated transport.

What does "whole" mean? It doesn't mean "part" I guarantee you that!
So if your reserve roll applies to the whole platoon, except those on a non dedicated transport, how the heck is some of the platoon already deployed???
You'll notice that the rules doesn't say "those elements of a platoon in reserve" or "the remaining squads in a platoon" it is the whole platoon except those that are embarked on a non dedicated transport.
As for the citation. All missions use a force org chart (except apocalypse) the rules for force org then apply to codex rules rules that limit the number of units you can deploy.
Can you tell me which missions limit deployment other than this? House missions don't count.

And what if you have immobile artillery in that platoon? Does it not deploy or do you have to deploy it outside of these rules?

Aftermath. wrote:And what if you have immobile artillery in that platoon? Does it not deploy or do you have to deploy it outside of these rules?
The rules for deploying immobile units was covered somewhere, but I can't seem to find it right now.
However, if there is no way to deploy something from reserve, why would you put it in reserve? You would just deploy the platoon as normal.
I assume you are speaking of some imperial armour unit. As there is no immobile artillery unit in the IG codex. Which one are you referring to as IA has different rules for each book.
I specifically remember the reference to deploying immobile units discussing IA units. It told you to deep strike the units regarding them as being air dropped or teleported into place. I just can't seem to find it anymore.
Edit:
I went through a few of my IA books and can't seem to find any immobile artillery pieces as part of an infantry platoon. I did notice that immobile only comes into effect after the model has been deployed not before it's deployed.

I believe, and this is going from memory, that Immobile units have permission to deep strike if they are put into reserves. It is my rough recollection that this information can be found in one of the main rule books, as it covers more then just forge-world units though very few units are immobilized to begin with. At a rough guess I would state to look at the deployment and reserve sections of the main book as a place to start researching if they do indeed deep strike in like both Idolator and I remember reading. In fact, it probably is berried in the section that details how units come onto the field from reserves. As for asking your organizer, please do that... as the back and forth between Idolator and Happyjew show the two very different opinions on how a platoon going into reserve function.
