Hello all, first post here, basically was a big space wolves player back in my school years, but had to quit due to real life in the way. Now that i have a decent paying job and a gf that wants to learn the rules, im jumping back in! basically, I have the aobr box that im painting now (I bought it a few years ago but never opened it lol) and I also bought a necron starter box recently, along with the 6th editiion rules. I have read the rules but know that reading and playing are two completely different things.

The advice im looking for is this: my gf is a new tabletop gamer, having only played dust tactics with me a few times, in which the rules are pretty straight forward. What would be my best plan of action into teaching myself and her the rules slowly so she does not get overwhelmed?

Go to your local gaming store and ask others to do it honestly. Its never the same when you have someone you know quite well teaching you.

Also buy my space wolves if you like them so much. im done with em.

I would love to go to a local gaming store, as that is how I learned the game. problem is they all closed down, closest one is over an hour away, and with a 8 month old and a three year old that cant keep still, I would find it difficult to sit in the store with our full attention on learning.

Best way to learn the rules? Play the game. If you got a store nearby where you can play with others head over and play with some of the more experienced players. Sure you'll lose a bit at first, but most people are friendly and will help you learn the rules.

You could also check out the Find a Game forum, someone there might know of a nearby place.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Start small.

The rulebook from AOBR is now one edition out of date, but should work for basic concepts, until you can get the 6th ed rulebook.

I'm teaching my daughters to play, and my wife plays very occasionally.

They prefer a themed game over a 'lets just line up and kill each other' approach.

Set up the scenery to fit a story or goal, and make up themed army lists to go with it for whatever army they want to play.

Let them pick the army, and the units they want. Don't force the internet's opinion of specific armies/units on them, and ignore it yourself if you like too. You aren't looking for an uber tournament army, after all.

Start simple. Start with the basic rules, and ignore the special rules until you are comfortable with those, unless they are something ubiquitous to the army like ATSKNF for marines or the Daemon rule for Daemons. You can work in Pinning, Soul Blaze, whatever as you go, once the groundwork is done.
