I don't really play 40k and got into the hobby for the modelling and painting aspects principally. I've recently decided to get into gaming and have started collecting and painting orks which I plan to paint up as DeathSkullz.

As I'm just starting out my first few games are likely to be small points so I've put together a 1000 points list after reading through the codex and watching lots of battle reports online. From my interpretations it's got a few mobs of boyz to run straight up to the enemy in trukks (or behind Killa kans and/or a gretchin meat shield), and a couple fast attack options to deal with a few things before they get to my boyz and act as distractions

Warboss with PK, TL shoota, BP and cybork body

11 slugga boyz. Nob with BP, PK
Trukk with reinforced ram

12 slugga boyz. Nob with BP, PK, eavy armour
Trukk with reinforced ram

20 shoota boyz. Nob with BP, PK

10 gretchin. Runtherd

3 Killa kans. Big shoota, rokkit launcha, grotzooka

3 warbikers. Nob with BP, PK

3 deffkoptas. TL rokkit launcha

993 pts

I have a bunch of thoughts on this list, so I'll just start right off.
First, I find it's not good to mix trukk boys with foot slogging boys. Go with either all trukk troops or foot slog them all. If slogging, make them shootas. If trukking, slugga/choppa. In sixth edition, Killa Kans took a serious hit, so I would consider not taking them, in favor of Big Guns units... they're awesome. Next, I love running deffkoptas as a distraction and early tank hunter, so keep those!
The other thing I'd say is that you generally want your army to be the same 'speed' all around. By splitting troops into walking and trukking, their army can deal with it in phases, instead of all at once. This is also true for the warbikes. Personally, I don't like painting bikes, so I don't run them, but they're also really really good in sixth. If it were me, I'd probably load up your boys into another trukk, take some big guns, and use the gretchin to screen the guns or hold a back objective. Those are my thoughts!

Cool, thanks for your thoughts. Since posting this I've acquired a couple more trukks, battle wagon and several more deffkoptas so likely to be putting everything in trukks. If doing that would people generally suggest not having any shoota boyz? Any thoughts on filling wagon with 20 shootaz and the trukks with sluggas?

Noble Duke hit the nail on the head, I feel so unnecessary these days.

Trukks aren't the most 'competitive' option because they really suffer if you don't go first. That said, they're not tedious like footslogging lists (so many models) and I've found them more reliable than BW lists.

Shootas give Sluggas a run for their money in Trukks, and are much better in any other situation. I wouldn't bother with a BW until you get 2-3 of them though.
