Subject: Starting space wolves - what to buy

I have played 40k for a while an have built up a few armies, but with christmas coming up soon I have decided to start with a new one. I want to have a very elite space wolf army as I already have a hoard army (orks), a shooty army (tau) and an small marine force (my invader marines). I love the idea of the wolf guard terminators, as I plan on running 3 units of them, led by Logan Grimnar. I am trying to do this as cheap as possible, but make it so that I end up with a competitive army with as few models as possible. I do not have the codex yet, but from this blog : http://space-wolves-grey.blogspot.co.uk/ , I have already got some ideas. Do you think this would be a good way to start and what are it's strengths and weaknesses?
HQ
Logan Grimnar
TROOPS
5 Wolf guard
5 Wolf guard
5 Wolf guard
HEAVY SUPPORT
5 long fangs w/ missile launchers
Razorback w/ lascannons
5 long fangs w/ heavy bolters
Razorback w/ lascannons Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, how many points would this roughly come to?

1. Go to FLGS on a 40K game night.
2. Announce to no one in particular "I have over 10,000 points of Space Marines".
3. Sit back and watch as some 30-ish Neckbeard who still lives with his parents not only disputes your claim, but goes on to describe his 30,000 points of Blood Angels and how he has been playing since Rogue Trader days... And yet you will have never seen him either play 40K or that army.
4. From here, you have several options. Continue the conversation, or just end it. Either way, I guarantee you will waste 1+ hour of your life talking to this guy. Have fun!

if you want a competitive terminator army don't play spacewolves. Their terminators may start cheap but they get expensive very quickly.
The only maybe viable competitive load out would be a a squad of wolf guard with combi weapons and power armor in a pod. Also
Logan is too expensive for what he brings to the table. If you want terminators play dark angels or wait for the spacewolves new codex.
Cheers!!! The point cost you want is 1130 pts with the terminators having no special upgrade other than TDA.

Thanks for the reply, I have my heart set on space wolves so i'm going to stick with them. Do we have any idea when the new codex is coming out for them? Is there a better character who can bring wolf guard as troops? Also, what I mean by competitive, is so that my armies are designed to win a few games, rather than just being fun. Sorry for that misunderstanding - my fault for not explaining it properly

Logan wing, as it is typically called, can be fun, but might not be super competitive.
I would really recommend taking two grey hunter squads simply because as you expand your collection, you may want to play other types of non terminator lists.
Space wolves have some great heavy support options in their long fangs so I may suggest those behind an ADL.
Points wise this would be about 1200 to 1300 points, I don't have my codex with me.

Thanks! I don't play in tournaments at all so i'm just bothered about getting revenge on that one guardsman player who manages to table my tau every time...
I may pick up a battleforce for the marines to convert to long fangs, which will also give me a drop pod for some wolf guard. Apparently scouts are supposed to be good for space wolves, is this true?

From my personal experience, the two type of units that helped my SW army win are Long Fangs with ML, Rune Priest and Thunderwolf Cavalry. Most of the Wolfguard I put in the table might shine when getting into CC but with the game being more shooter at this point, they tend to be just free KP for my opponents.

If you're looking to beat guard, then your friends are LF, GH with Melta in a DP. If you're feeling really evil you can stuff some Termies in a LR with a WGBL that has Saga of the Hunter, which will allow you to use outflank (and stealth?) on the LR.
Scouts are ok, if you like using scouts. I usually outfit mine with 4 snipers and a ML, so I can peck stuff off at a distance in cover.

Do people think that the razorbacks will be worth it? I don't know whether to get a landraider for some wolf guard or two razorbacks for the long fangs.

Get the LR, LF can sit back in cover and peck stuff off (ideally you want your LF behind an ADL). Moving your LF up the board is just going to get them in closer range to get shot up. Also packing up a LF unit and moving it is going to eat up two turns before they can fire at full strength.

I disagree. I think Wolf guard are one of the best units in the game as, although I admit you are right that they can get expensive,
I still think that Space Wolves are the best army for Terminators in the game, as they are cheap (in comparison to other Terminators) and can be changed in lots of different ways.
