With the new codex so recently released, the LotD got a massive boost. It seems that they're now not only playable, but reasonably competitive.
The new rules look like a lot of fun, so I decided to find a way to use them in my SM army.
Now, before I go any further, I must explain tgat my first army was Necrons. I love the little not-robots, so when I started SM last Christmas that I would try to combine the two armies thematically and with fluff. So my chapter is an Iron Hands successor who have gone renegade, allying themselves with the Tomb World under their Fortress-Monastery.
So, my idea for a counts-as LotD for this army is a unit of marines who have either been almost completely made mechanical through injury and typical IH self-purging or marines who have submitted themselves to bio-transferrance, placed into mechanical bodies modelled after the typical Astartes, becoming one with the machine but sacrificing their individuality.
I have plans to convert a squad of these up for use with friends.
Does anyone think that it's an at all good idea?
I'm not such a fan of buying fine cast infantry, particularly infantry with flamed on them. It's good to have something unique, no?

Sounds good to me!
I also am building a small 5man squad to LotD with a few hooded skull heads I found on ebay. I was wondering how are you going to play them? My plan was to load them out with combi melta, melta, and multimelta to drop in and pop any vehicle I wish is there any other way to play them?

im lazy, i just use some of my less chaosy and mutated chaos marines when i play them (they are painted similar to black legion) and its worked out so far. I attribute it to the lots'o skulls and black paint

That sounds like a fine plan. Nice background, plenty of scope for awesome conversions. go for it (just remember to post WIPS!)

Great idea, just wanted to give some advise. I tried using necron bits for bionic enhancements with my marines and it was difficult. Just keep in mind necron models are taller than asartes models, so leg swaps will be difficult without some work, but arms and torsos with some greenstuff can work fine. I gave up and just bought some IH sprues. Don't be like me.

I have never payed much attention to the Legion unit in previous editions of the game, but after hearing about the improvements, I have changed my mind a bit. The combination of special rules they get is simply too tempting.
I may steal a bit of the OP's idea for my own unit. My primary Space Marine army these days is Imperial Fists. According to the fluff (well, at least according to Ian Watson's novel "Space Marine"...the fluff might have changed for some people) they are prone to acts of self-flagellation. So a unit of crazed, over the top fanatics that have destroyed so much of their bodies they now are more machine than man might fit.

Here are some photos of the first 3 WIPs. The gauss blaster (think that's what it's called, I've never used it) counts as a plasma cannon. AP2 Ignores Cover is always nice. My LOTD will be Ravenguard Marines who were in the Deathwatch and came back with advanced anti-xenos tech.
I've used LOTD in several games now, here's the good and the bad.
3++ save on a 10 man unit is awesome. Throw the unit at an enemy deathstar and tarpit it. Put a powerfist on the sargeant for killy power. Decent in a challenge because of the save.
Also good in the enemy backfield with a second round of drop pods. I sometimes drop the first round of pods empty, then do a beta strike in the 2nd turn ( hopefully after enemy reserves come in). LOTD usually come in with this second drop, so it gives me a good solid unit that won't fold right away. Good for those guard armies with 3-4 plasma vets hanging around.
Obviously good as an objective denier etc.
Now that the points cost is cheaper, they should be an almost gimme in any marine army.

.Only a fool believes there is such a thing as price gouging. Things have value determined by the creator or merchant. If you don't agree with that value, you are free not to purchase. |

The WIP pics are broken, but i'm seriously loving the idea. Infact the whole theme of your army is pretty cool. do you have a name for the chapter?
