I'd like to build a competitive 1500 Imperial Fists list around Lysander. Is it possible? Where should he go? What other units are must haves to balance the list? I'm starting from scratch here and need help. Thanks.

Im sure before anyone can give you a little better answer to your question you'll have to be more specific. I am sure there are ton of variations of what you can create with Lysander. Some things you might want to ask yourself:

What is it I want to accomplish with this list, i.e. Drop Pods, Shooty, etc?
Do I want him to walk or will you be running him with another unit?
What unit and how are they going to get there?
What are you going to use to back him up since he is more CC oriented?
What are you going to take to take advantage of the Imperial Fists Chapter Tactics?

Very good points. I was thinking of creating a very expensive Lysander/Hammernator/Land Raider death star. That takes almost half my points. My questions being 1) what should the rest of this army do to support this death star and 2) is it competitively viable?

you shoudnt need land raider for tha tdeath star, would probally be better to feed those points into more termies, and maybe a libby termie, the ndeepstrike them. it will get them there faster tha nLand raider anyways.

scouts for objective? or tacs....
thunder fire cannons would do nice (they do well in every list )

Need them for taking out and holding objectives
ELITE
Centurion Assault Squad?
Terminator Assault Squad?
Dedicated Transport - Land Raider
FAST ATTACK
Bike Squads?
Land speeders?
Assault Squads?
Storm talons?
HEAVY
Do you want them to support your TAC Squads or hunt out tanks/ hard hitters on the other team?

If I was going to play IF, I would go pretty much all pods and max out as many tactical marines as you can get and throw in some sterngaurd for spice. The idea would be to get close to the enemy and just devastate him with a high volume of what is close to the equivalent of bs5 boltershots. Lysander goes in a unit of sternguard also deployed aggressively to tank wounds and give counter punch.

I think the drop-pod deployment sounds scary, but one I have little experience with. Personally I was considering tactical squads in las cannon Razorbacks supported by either Whirlwinds or Thunderfire cannons to support the Lysander/Hammernator/ Raider death star. Viable?

Personally I'd just build a generic chapter master ( who would be kickass for the same cost as Lysander) and run the list as IH. I might be bias though. But yeah apart from wanting to use a different chapter trait( which would give you more) list looks good. Only thing, you have no AA. A lot of points in razorbacks too.
