A quick easy question, I have the rulebook and the FAQs and the codex yet It seems unclear to me if my HQ choice can make use of the wolf standard of his GH unit in a challenge. Can anyone direct me to the right passage?

An independent character joined to a unit is considered being part of the unit for all rules purposes. The wolf standard confers its ability to all models in the unit of the bearer when he uses it. The ic can therefor use the "reroll all 1's rolled" ability in a challenge if he was joined to the unit containing a wolf standard that activated it.

I assume also that it is this way, Were does it say that? because I for example may not use fenrisian wolves bought as wargear in challenge as per FAQ so why would this buff be any different?

Because of the independent character rules. The last sentence in the left column in the box on p 39.

Because the effect is enacted prior to the challenge. Read the wording of the wolf banner, the banner isn't used in the the same phase as it is unfurled.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.

Even if the Wolf Standards effect could be called upon for the assault phase you are in the banner would work on independent characters from that unit that are in a challenge. The independent character is part of the unit (even in a challenge) and the wolf standard explicitly affects "all models" in the unit.

thanks all, that is probably enough proof to fight my case if someone tries to call me out on this one

Just remember to unfurl the banner in the previous shooting phase.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.
