Subject: Iron Lords 1850, trying to finalise before beginning buying and painting with purpose

Looking for final decisions on this, after researching the iron hands and successors, combined with a colour scheme i like i'm gonna go with Iron Lords.
Plan to do a Plog for the army as well seeing as the only time i've completed a fully painted army was through a plog, gaining useful hints, tips and feedback on my work. Also wanna maybe get some help coming up with some good fluff for them. I've started with squad names based on latin that links to the features or roles the units fulfill.
Here's the list
HQ
Captain Ferrus Artex (220)
- Space Marine Captain
- Bike
- Artificer Armour
- Thunder Hammer
- Shield Eternal
Captain Gabriel Ajax (210)
- Space Marine Captain
- Bike
- Artificer Armour
- Burning Blade
- Storm Shield
Command Squad Artex (245)
- Space Marine Command Squad
- Bikes
- 4 Graviton Guns
- 1 Apothecary
- 1 Power Weapon
- 2 Storm Shields
Command Squad Ajax (250)
- Space Marine Command Squad
- Bikes
- 4 Graviton Guns
- 1 Apothecary
- 1 Power Weapon
- 2 Storm Shields
- Melta Bombs
2 pretty solid units that will both be a serious threat, combined with character IWND roles and FNP whilst being T5.
Troops
Squad Gravitus (145)
- Space Bike Squad (5)
- 2 Graviton Guns
- 1 Combi-Graviton Gun
Squad Pressura (145)
- Space Bike Squad (5)
- 2 Graviton Guns
- 1 Combi-Graviton Gun
Both names bear latin links to the nature of the grav weapons.
Squad Conflatilem (135)
- Space Bike Squad (5)
- 2 Melta Guns
- 1 Combi-Melta
Name is latin for molten, basically what the enemy will become :-)
Squad Flammeus (125)
- Space Bike Squad (5)
- 2 Flamers
- 1 Combi-Flamer
Even those not familiar with latin should stop the name link here.
Fast Attack
Storm Talon Medusa (125)
- Storm Talon Gunship
- Sky Hammer Missile Launcher
Storm Talon Stheno (125)
- Storm Talon Gunship
- Sky Hammer Missile Launcher
Storm Talon Euryale (125)
- Storm Talon Gunship
- Sky Hammer Missile Launcher
These names come from greek myth that tells the tale of the gorgons. most have heard of medusa however she had 2 sisters, stheno and euryale, linking into the 3 talons. also has a slight link to the homeworld of the iron hands, also called Medusa.
Total- 1850
Ok so thats the list. the one change i was thinking of was possibly dropping 1 talon for another bike squad set up like Squad Flammeus.
Better or worse for the list? Needed more than a 3rd talon?
Thoughts please dakka. Automatically Appended Next Post: For those wondering, Iron Lords are a successor to Iron Hands and run this colour scheme:

Love the list and the back story fnp and it will not die is going to be lethal and those command squads are nasty. You pretty much have all the bases covered its just making sure the relevant unit does what it does best. The only problem you may have is up against a hord army because those they can tar pit your bikes and you may have trouble killing a vast army such as orks

Thanks for the Feedback!
I agree hordes are more of an issue for this list than any other, although i can switch to twin-linked bolters on every unit to try and deal with them.
Hordes were also the other reason i was thinking about a second flamer squad in swap for one storm talon.
The issue with that is losing some AA.
I cannot decide which is better for the list overall.
Thoughts?

Thunderfire cannons would be very usefull in a bike/ talon list because they give you the ability to take out hordes and all the units the bikes can't deal with.
I would drop the flamer bike unit and one talon and take 2 thunderfires. Use the extra 50 points to buy a backfield camping unit, or power fists for the command squads.

TFC's would certainly help against hordes but they you be the only static part of the army so would be an easy target, forcing me to compromise the fast element to accomodate them.
Would you all say 2 talons is enough or stick with 3?

I would rather see a StormRaven Escorted by a Storm Talon for AA. Frees you up 50pts, maybe bolster some of your Bike squads a bit. Or maybe some walk on scouts?
Edit: I just realized I've given pretty much the same advice to two of your lists.

Didn't give too much thought to the raven/talon mix up. will have to think on that.
Can the Talon "escort" the raven on? Not too sure how the rule works for them.
Yeah but its all good, i'm torn between which of the two to run. If i'm honest i'm leaning towards the bike list but nothing is set in stone at all.

Yes, the Talon can escort the Raven, so they will always come on together.
I like the Bike list better TBH.

That is sweet about the talon. Though i guess the flipside is bad reserve rolling really poos on my AA parade.

But, barring some king of enemy reserve manipulation you'll have then both in T3 8/9 games. 2/3 games they both hit the board T2.

How will you kit your command squads out?
The way it was wording in the new dex, it almost made it seem the apothecary could take any weapon option as well.
or something like this?
Apoth
Grav gun
Grav gun power weapon
Grav gun stormshield
Grav gun stormshield

True. though i have no idea what i would spend the extra 50 points on. don't think i need to and at the same time don't really want to plow more points into the command squads.
Any ideas? maybe upgrades for either the talons or raven talon mix? Automatically Appended Next Post: buckero0 wrote:How will you kit your command squads out?

I read it as if you take an apothercary, he cnnot as he exchanges his gear for the needle (forget its real name)
but what you have put above for load out is pretty much exactly what i was thinking. Then i can place the accompanying captain and the 2 storm shields on the extremities of the squad so any helldrake or ap3 or better blast has to go through a 3+ inv first to minimize damage done.

The nice thing about the thunderfire cannons is you can hide them 60 inches away inside any terrain since they don't need LoS ideally in the bottom floor of a LoS blocking building.
They also bolster 2 pieces of terrain so you can get a pretty good cover save out of 2 pieces of terrain.
The extra power fists will add a bit more bite to the command squad
2 Talons is enough.

I fully agree, but i think i really need 4 troops choices at 1850. 3 is cutting it fine don't you think? Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok so after taking in evryones comments from this thread and my other thread (Pod list) i was wondering which of these would serve me better overall:

I prefer list 1. If you could find the 25 points to make the Stromtalon into a 2nd Raven then perhaps list 2. How about drop the meltabombs and both combi-gravs (I think the 36 grav shots will be enough). Then take 2 Storm Ravens. That gives you 2 badass gun ships that will stick around even against pretty serious AA

True, although you know full well i already have 1 talon.
What about this tweeking to fit 2 talons and one raven:
Swap Burning Blade for power fist
drop the combi-melta and combi flamer.
gets me enough points.

I'd either go 3 talons for list 1 or 2 SRs for list 2. I thought you had 2 SRs? I wouldn't drop the burning blade it'll actually help keep that squad alive. I don't think a mix of SRs and STs is a great idea.
