Hey all I tried looking this up and couldn't find it so I'm sorry it's prolly been discussed a million times but do marker lights disappear after the shooting phase or players turn? Thanks

They are expended as soon as you use them, and then any remaining are removed at the end of the phase

So I completely got bamboozeled in the fact that the ones that were not used in his shooting phase he carried over to the assault phase and used them in over watch if I'm correct

He can use marker lights in the assault phase. But they have to be fired in the assault phase. He couldn't use successful hits from the shooting phase in the assault phase.

But he could shoot them in over watch, then other units that also fire in support can use the markers to up thier BS durring the over watch.

Wait - how was he firing Overwatch in his Assault Phase? You only assault in your phase which means he would have kept it until your Assault phase.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Well what he did was keep everything very close and balled up,so when I tried to assault one squad he said that the other units within 12inch of the squad I was assaulting could over watch my unit as well. I said ok whatever thought it was lame but not a big deal, so then with two or 3 units of pathfinders he shot marker lights all over the place and would wipe out my squads. I thought that was also lame but there was an instance and I can't remember what it was at the moment where I asked if the lights ended on turn or phase and he said turn. So that's why I wanted to console the great minds of Dakka

Defiantly look at the supporting fire rule and show it to your friend as well, he made a few errors, while also pointing out the rules for Marker Lights.

Still it is advisable to have a 'shield squad' when it comes to assaulting a cluster of Tau units, their ability to support each other and modify the Ballistic Score of snap-shots can easily make over-watch a dangerous prospect. By assaulting with two squads, a cheaper throw-away squad and the main squad you want to assault with, you can force them to shoot at the weaker unit and save the stronger one for the job at hand. If they chose not to fire on you and the shield squad gets into assault range, at least that is one less Tau unit firing over-watch that turn.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

If a bunch of Tau units are firing overwatch at a single charger, there's no problem with gaining markerlight hits from that overwatch fire, and then using them with other units firing in the same overwatch. But there's no way for them to already have markerlight hits waiting, nor any way for markers generated in overwatch to get used beyond that overwatch.

Unfortunately, I would have to post the rules themselves to explain what the situation should of looked like. This forum has a rule against doing so and even though others might be willing to break them I am respectful of such things. Game Workshop has a reputation of being a little 'sue happy' and I rather not see this site get taken down while the Provider investigates a bogus copy write violation claim. So I do apologize that I can not simply out right tell you what mistakes your friend made and how it should of been played. I also would have a little hard time doing so in any case, because I do not know all the factors involved in your particular situation such as where his troops where, where yours where and what actions your friend took that where incorrect.

The best I can do is say page 32 of the Tau codex will inform your friend of the correct distance to measure to see if units are even allowed to Support Fire and any further limitations that are in still in effect that Support Fire needs to abide by. Page 68 will highlight will inform them on when marker-light tokens can be spent for certain benefits and when they removed from play, 'wasted' if they are not used prior to that point. These two pages will hold the answer to your question, and because of that the best I can do is direct you towards them in order to stay on the good side of Game Workshop lawyers and Dakka site administrators both.
