You put a lot of work into your character then they wipe the servers 2 years later when the money isn't there anymore.
The problems are that Mythic screwed the game over post-release instead of polishing it. This caused a massive haemorrhaging of subscriptions, which in turn led to server closures, which led to EA pulling the plug since it's a licensed IP. EA is also notoriously eager to pull the plug on it's MMOs.
Conversely, my Everquest characters are a thing that still exists after more than 13 years, due to EQ being owned by Sony. Similarly, and despite the drop in subscription numbers, I can't see my World of Warcraft characters going anywhere for at least another decade, despite some being almost 11 years old already. ....Holy crap.
Who needs kids when you have MMO characters?
