Reecius and Pascal bust out some hot Marine on Marine action in this 1750pt game. Pascal tries out a Centurionstar and maxes out the IF Chapter Tactics while Reecius tries out Tactical Spam UMs with Clagar and Tigurius!
Nice batrep. I'm curious to see how a horde templar army would do. Reece, how do you think your list would match up vs. a helldrake list? I know you took out the heavy weapons in the tactical squads, but how do you think that would be mitigated? Hellturkey's still roast marines with ease. I'm building more bolter marines for my Black Templars as I think they will need the power of the bolter now. I'm hoping to get some games in with them soon. My Templars will need some overhaul work done to what I'm normally used to playing. At least my Biker Marshal of killy deathâ„¢ can still be used.
Yeah, jump in! It takes some time, practice and money to get them to the point where they look decent, but it is fun. Good luck with it!
@CaptKaruthors
I think BT are actually really good. Getting a 5+ DtW on most of your army is really good, plus Crusader is a nice bonus to speed them up, and help run down high In enemies in combat. The challenge rule is pretty cool is you plan on taking the super punchy CM. That makes him seriously deadly in a fight.
Plus BTs can still take normal Scouts and Tacticals, plsu you can ally in a Libby, so they honestly don't lose much.
The horde I think could work the only real downside I think is not having as many scoring units.
Heldrakes are a PITA, no doubt. The one upside is that if you have Rhinos it helps a ton to mitigate Turkey breathe, and then you use your Doctrines to twin link your weapons, hopefully in rear arc, and use weight of dice to bring the stupid Heldrakes down. It is rough though, no doubt. I am pretty sure I will have to add a Stormtalon or two for just that reason.
I hear ya about the Storm Talons. My biggest gripe is that they die so quickly. 2HP blows. It's so easy for them to die to a vector strike, but yet I field them because going full storm raven seems to take points away from other stuff. For the same amount of points I can get 2 typhoons. It's a toss up. The other thing I would consider is that AA artillery from FW's book Aeronautica. Putting those on the table may be helpful now. Have you guys done any testing with the Stalker or Hunter yet? There are so many ideas I want to test, but so little time these days to play...that I have to sort of live through you guys at FLG. LOL. Having a soon to be 1 year old eats into a lot of what once was gaming time. Plus, getting games in my local area now is difficult given that the crew I used to play with has given up on 40k all together.
Haha, we get that lot, actually. Life gets hectic and a child makes it even more so. None for me yet, but I hope not too far away.
Yeah, the Stormtalon goes down like a punk, quad guns wreck them, but they are still the best tool for killing other flyers we have. I tried the Stalker and it was really underwhelming in the first go around. I was playing against White Scars with 2 Storm Talons and it whiffed, then it plinked off of the Storm Talon's armor, and on the third shot it stunned one. Really not the best initial showing and on turn 1 it had nothing to shoot. I wasn't impressed at all, honestly. That's not to say it isn't good, just that the first showing was pretty meh. Single shot weapons are like that, they suffer melta gun syndrome. It feels like they always miss or fall flat due to the susceptibility to randomness.
Thanks for another batrep, Reece! This is just personal preference, but I find space marines boring. The only thing close to monstrous creatures they have, which are one of my favorite types of units in 40k, are Centurions.

Good report. The bit of tactical advice for the Rhino is insightful. I believe there is still a lot of utility available for the Rhino, however, I also think folks went away from it in 6th because of First Blood. Personally, I don't think First Blood is a complete autoloss and can be mitigated. An extra little tidbit that became very apparent is that vehicles are not being removed from the table as much as they were in 5th edition. Folks don't load up on things like Melta, so even when the Rhino is wrecked, it still provides decent LOS blocking and/or cover. Thanks for sharing.
No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Yeah, that is why I have my Nids! Haha, I like the big beasties, too, but Marines are my first love. My Marine army is stupid big, like bigger than I could every possibly put to use but it's fun. I prefer infantry armies so the way they play now is exactly to my liking. I am really enjoying them, personally.
@Sarigar
Glad you liked it! Yeah, I use Rhinos all the time, now. When 6th hit, we all knee-jerked as they got so nerfed but as the meta adjusts and, as you noted, less heavy AT weapons on the table, they have become a lot better. I find they give you that extra survivability to make it to end game and score those objectives to win.
First Blood is a bummer, but if you use layered missions as pretty much every GT does, it isn't as bad.
Personally I love Rhinos now, you just have to remember they are for transporting shooting units. For the amount of Hell Turkies, Riptides, and such I face all the time, they are pretty much essential. And, the good old tank shock is still game winning.
I would really like to see how a variation of this list does against franky's heldrake heavy list. That would be the "case study" of whether this type of army works.
I also have been wanting to see what a ravenguard variation of this list would be like so that your tac squads can scout forward 12" and basically start nearly in bolter range with stealth on the squad turn 1.

Yeah, I think the Turkey test will be really telling. If I can fight that effectively, that is huge. Riptides also.
And I was thinking the exact same thing with Raven Guard or Khan Scars. That would be so goo against armies like Tau! You'd be on them turn 2, they would get 1 turn to shoot you.
Yeah I think those will be awesome. The white scars version can even scout a land raider with TH/SS termies or grav cannon cents. Now if I just had 6 chimeras and TAC squads...that is what I get for only having bikes and termies.
The riptide is a good point. Grav weapon cents in a spartan LR would do for it every game but a couple small bike squads with grav guns might be a better fit with the army.

I like the RG and Scars though as you scout, then move forward, get out, take it on the chin, then assault and Tau are done for. You take heavy casualties for sure, but all it takes is a few marines on combat and they can kiss their asses good bye.
And as I have been collecting my marines for years and years, I have like 7 Rhinos! haha
