It's a popular question, so you'll probably find plenty o advice on other threads!

Conventional wisdom is 2 core sets, I would also add the TIE fighter & X-Wing Expansion. This gives you all x-wing and TIE fighter pilots, then start to expand into the ships you like.

Initial outlay of around £70 in real money ( maybe $110).

At online game store prices, as you're in Canada, you can probably get that for even less (lets say, $80). For that $80 you will have an amazing foundation of ships, upgrades, pilots, etc...

The core sets are an amazing value, and yes, two are almost a must. From there, one X-wing and on Tie Fighter will add exponential value as they'll give you so many more ways to play the ships you own.

From there, the wisdom used to be one of each other Wave 1 ship, then wherever you want from there... but there are just so many good options at this point that the sky is the limit.

Either way, if you have an online shop offering free shipping at $100 as many do, you can get a lot of good stuff for two players, at that price-point.

I'm kinda in the same boat here and I have gone and got the starter, 2 extra TIEs, a TIE advanced and 3 A wings (one of my favourite ships ever).
I'm guessing I should pick up an X wing just to get the rest of their upgrades yes?
What about TIE interceptors? I hear they hit hard but die quickly so only 1 will get taken down fast.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I would say TIE Interceptors do work better in packs, so far 2 are working for me regardless of pilots (seem to be using Turr the most, take that internet), and with that new Interceptor double pack of sexy awesome coming out in December, looks like you got a lucky opportunity to get some.

As for the X-Wing, get one. Wedge beats face everytime I put him on the table, but me and Garven don't seem to get along for some strange reason. As for the Droid cards, so far I'm a bit undecided about the R5 Astro, but Dutch will thank you for getting him R5-K6.

Thing with Garving is that he works when he is the best ship on your side- that way he can attack, spend focus, pass it on to another pilot who hasn't shot, or draw fire, focus, pass. If you run him with someone better, he can't pass them focus before they shoot, is less likely to get shot, and so is basically restricted to passing off focus before the chafe starts firing- making him a lot less amazing.

I did run him with Rookie mooks to get his focus ability to work, but have never seemed to feel like he deserved his spot in the starting team, probably because my die don't seem to have eyeballs on them, only blanks and blanks...

Having said that, never tried him with my A-Wings, and Dead-eye has become an almost auto include as far as my Greens are concerned.

Garvin and "Dutch" were made for each other. Dutch gets a target lock, and garven gets one too, then Garven shoots, spending the focus he took, and gives it to "Dutch." So, in the end, both are getting to use focus and target lock.

Just out of curiosity, do you know of any online store that offers free shipping to Canada? I can find some that offer free shipping within the continental US but not up to Canada.

2 Cores and one of each of the wave #1 ships makes a great game for friends and family.

I just learned that Frontline Gaming is selling the game (with their normal discounts). It may not be free shipping, but Reece and the guys will do you right.

You could use it to get a defensive focus on wedge/tycho etc.
