So, I want some marines for allies for my Tau (To build into a full army with time). And I want marines that can go melee. I'm kind of thinking of White Scars because they are battle brothers with Tau, BUT! Blood Angels, Black Templars and Space Wolves all seem to be better at melee, The problem is, They are only Allies of Convenience instead of Battle Brothers. My question is, Does this have any serious effect during gameplay? And, if it dosent have a critical effect on gameplay, What marines would be best for Tau allies with melee ability?

Templars are BB under the new codex i believe, they use the C:SM allies

For allies BA work well, they have a focus on melee and have alot of jump infantry which makes it easier for you to get the melee units where you need them.

There isn't much in the way of special rules to share between SM and Tau. (i think the only useful one is one of the banners)

But an allied in spess Marhen bike captain with a command squad full of melee weapons should be substantially killy.

Probably go for black Templar as ademantium will and rerolls in challenges are nice. EDIT: Also crusade

I actualy have a small Space Wolf force already, I just find them alittle boring as it seems like half the units in the codex aint that good compared to the rest (WS and BS 3 on assault marines and bikes and one of the two troops, While costing the same as their equivalents for other armies. Scouts being elites and stuff..)

You want a captain on a bike, bike squad, and a techmarine. This way you can pass around two HQ's to joint squads, and have a fast scoring unit at t5.

The bike captain/chapter master is a solid HQ and with CC wargear is an absolute nightmare to face - especially if your opponent only anticipates a pure tau list. Bikes as troops are fast, scoring, and tough with the option to take 2 special weapons. I like grav guns on mine. The techmarine is a good LD booster for firewarriors or broadsides. I think he can even repair tau vehicles too, if your hammerheads or skyrays get damaged.

Been out of the game for awhile, trying to find time to get back into it.

Your belief is mistaken. Can't remember the page, but there's a designer's note about it in C:SM.

I agree with AlmightyWalrus, the Codex is clear that BlackTemplars should still use the Black Templar allies matrix, but there are enough people out there with issues with this rule that it needs a FAQ fast to stop all debate
