Subject: First Ever Tyranid List... Starting 500.

This is what I've scrounged together from bits and Birthday purchases:
Hive Tyrant: two powers from Biomancy; twin-linked devourers with brainleech worms; twin-linked devourers with brainleech worms; armoured shell. 240
20 Hormagaunts 120
10 Termagants 50
10 Termagants 50
4 Ripper Swarms 40
500 points
The idea is to get the Hormagaunts to run ahead of the main force, providing cover and acting as a lethal distraction.
The Tyrant and the shooty Gants hammer up behind them and shoot down anything they come across.
45 bodies inc. Hive Tyrant could be hard to shift at 500.

Termagants are cheaper for a meatshield. Be careful about running too far ahead, remember synapse!
It may be worth dropping the hormagaunts and the rippers for a Tervigon in a troop slot. A T6 W6 3+ MC making more termagants is a pain to deal with. It also solves the big issue your list has-synapse. You only have one synapse creature for all your swarms, meaning your army needs to be clustered around the Tyrant, and cannot spread out.
You could also try this:
HQ:
200 Tervigon, Catalyst, Crushing Claws
Troops:
200 Tervigon, Catalyst, Crushing Claws
50 Termagants (10)
50 Termagants (10)
500 Even, garunteed FNP or twwo rolls each on the biomancy table. You get 2 small squads of gants, a tough troop MC, and two gant-spawners.

Bare in mind, that the list above is what I have. There won't be any more purchases until this lot is painted and even then not until next month.
That's the first 500. I'm trying to build on this.
For the next 500, there will be two Tervigons and possibly some Hive Guard. Automatically Appended Next Post: I do like your list though. Automatically Appended Next Post: I could drop the Rippers for Swarmlord instead.

At 500 points, a dual TLbrainleech tyrant will be a better fit than the Swarmlord. If its what you have, its not bad, just realize that everything will be right by your tyrant. The rippers are the most important to keep in synapse, if the hormagaunts are just a meatshield, letting them IB at the enemy may not be a big deal. If you had the models, a tyranid prime or two could suit the army better than a tyrant.

Prime > Tyrant?
How so?

Cheaper- two primes costs less than a Tyrant, while providing double the synapse. They're also ICs.
In larger games Tyrant>Prime, but in a small game like this Primes have potential.
Example:
80 Prime, Scything Talons, Devourer
80 Prime, Scything Talons, Devourer
120 Hormagaunts (20)
50 Termagants (10)
50 Termagants (10)
40 Ripper Swarms (4)
420 Points
You now have 80 points left to add stuff. A Zonathrope could be a good choice.
The Tyrant is good, especially as once get into bigger games, but 2 primes would solve your synapse problem without a large change in the number of models you'd need.

Its hard to bring swarmlord or flyrant in low points games, at least thats what they say but i always had much better luck with these guys than bringing warriors as hqs. I think tervigons would be a great addition of course you will be painting many more gaunts to support them. I've never had to much luck with hormagaunts as they drop so quickly, i switched over to genestealers and have had better success in melee regardless of points. I'm a big fan of using the hive tyrant to out flank a tervigon or hormagaunts, the rage on the horms is really nice in large groups.

Well the only reason I have Hormagaunts is because I have twenty just lying around, left over from a commission from a decade ago.
I thought I might as well use them and save some money at the same time.
Twenty is quite a threat that shouldn't be ignored. They make great distractions as if you don't deal with them, you have a lot of cc attacks to deal with.
I thought my next purchases might be Tervigons, but I'm not sure if they will help with the army, where I will need some Anti Tank at 750-1000 points.

I've had the same anti tank issue as i dont have any hive guard or zoans yet. The only thing that saved me is the lack of tanks my opponents have brought so far and my trygon prime which can pop them in a pinch the turn after deep strike.

Id say scrap the rippers. Put the terms in a pod with devourers.

Personally I would drop the rippers, they don't add much and dies out of synapse. Flyrant could be fun with this list. toss a Thorax weapon on it and you could really eat troops.

I'm not using 10 pt troops that have the toughness of wet paper.
I see that they have immense shooting, but their ability to take dmg is not good. You also can't take a thorax weapon with wings.
I'm using my leaping tyrant as a regular Tyrant in games of 500 & 750 and flying in everything after that.
Definitely going to drop the rippers. Very sub par. Might wangle in some Gargoyles or a single HG in instead.
