Recently had a friendly tournament at local game store, had lots of fun, but learned a few things about my old army list, which can be found here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/551145.page
Learned a couple of things from the games, mainly my fire warriors really do need transports for protection, riptides can be stars with proper support, keep my army close together and not spread out, and wraith knights are a pain in the @#!!!!

So as a result I've created a new army list for future 1500 tournaments using wait I learned, but I am open to any comments or criticism you may have.

HQ
Ethereal (Warlord) - 50

Commander - 194
2 MP, Irridium Armour
PEN, NJS, DC, TL
2 Marker Drones

Troops
11 Fire warriors - 194 (Ethereal goes here)
with Devil Fish
DP

12 Fire warriors - 203
with Devil Fish
DP

11 Kroot - 82
Hound and Sniper rounds

Elites
Rip Tide - 210
IA, EWO, VT, FB

Rip Tide - 210
IA, EWO, VT, FB

3 Crisis Suits - 246
Each with 2 MP, TL and 2 Marker Drones (Commander goes here)

Fast Attack
Piranha - 50
FB

Piranha - 50
FB

Total - 1487

Essentially the strategy here is to keep my army close together supporting each but mobile enough to move around and out maneuver the enemy and eventually encircle them. The commander and his squad of missle crisis with PEN should deal with most threats, while my riptides should be able to handle flyers in this size of a game. I am a little light on troops and may have some difficulty with AV 14, which is why i added the 2 FB Piranhas. But I've also thought about switching them for a skyray. But if you have any suggestions to this list please feel free

Only 12 models can fit in the DF.

Are your Riptides using FB as secondary weapons? Otherwise the odds of destroying AV12 fliers aren't great. At least with the FB on each you can make 2 no fly zones.

I think you either need to go in the direction of more maneuverability or more gun line.

For the maneuverability drop the FWs and ethereal and get some more Kroot to outflank, a Mark'O and let the Crisis Suit Squad and Commander hide out of LOS easier.

If you want to go more gunline, drop the DF and get an ADL and QuadGun, another squad of FW.

If you aren't feeling the Piranhas you could get a suicide Bodyguard suit instead, with Fb x 2, Shield and Stim injector. Hopefully drop him in turn 2, pain to remove especially if you can hide him from most of the opposing army.

Or any combination of the above, or ignore it all! List looks decent, except for the Ethereal having to hoof it

I like your crisis suit squad that double as your S7 profile and your ML profile. Solid idea. Keep in mind though, that's a large footprint. You might have to play test it to see how it handles in combat, but the function is there.

In general, Tau are an ok shooty army, but markerlights make them great. Glad to see them in there. Just remember that riptides come with a markerlight tax, especially for the IA profile. You have that covered.

You might be able to save points by dropping VT from one of the riptides. I feel that having two riptides with VT might be too much. That choice ultimately depends on your meta.

I like piranhas and would like to have more in my army (currently 0 lol). They are a decent melta platform that is quick and can hit enemy lines T2 in most cases.

I'm trying to think of problems this list can encounter. I don't see flyers being a big problem. You have a full crisis squad and commander shooting 16 rockets w/ PENchip + 2 IA riptides. You MIGHT have problems from hard to reach AV if your piranhas can not get to them, but you still have two riptides. Hordes won't be a big deal because of riptide pie plates and plenty of FWs.

" Otherwise the odds of destroying AV12 fliers aren't great. At least with the FB on each you can make 2 no fly zones. "

If he Nova charges his IA, he'll get a ordinance S9 AP2 large blast. That's stronk. What makes metla so good is it's attack at half range. I doubt a flyer will be within 8'' of a riptide.

"I think you either need to go in the direction of more maneuverability or more gun line. "

He has two DF, and that's a lot of maneuverability. I would maybe argue that another small FW squad of 6 or 9 to hold on to at least one objective at home would be ideal. One or two DF is plenty of maneuverability. Outflanking kroot is meh. He already has one, and adding another won't ensure contesting any kind of objective mid-field or on the enemy objective simply because Kroot are poopy. 6+ armor save? :|

"If you aren't feeling the Piranhas you could get a suicide Bodyguard suit instead, with Fb x 2, Shield and Stim injector."

The loadout on those bodyguards is illegal . You can use 3 hard points on them. I assume you would want FBx2 and maybe the shield gen. Let's look at point costs. It costs 174pts for the loadout you are suggesting (minus the Stim Injector since you only have 3 hardpoints.) That's pretty pricey. :( Keep in mind too, suicide suits should be made as cheap as possible with one goal in mind: To eliminate the target. They're survival is not suppose to be guaranteed, nor should it be extended by protective gear. Save those points for other equipment, those suits were dead the moment they touched down.

Thanks for the suggestions, I should note though that the Riptides both have FB, I made the changes in the list now. I forgot that DF can only hold 12 and that I would have to drop a FW to fit him in, also changed in the army list. Thanks for pointing those out. I do like the idea of having a small squad of FW in the back to hold onto my objectives though, ill take off 2 fire warriors in each squad, keep them at a nice round 10 squad each, take out the hound, and the NSJ on the commander, and that will give me enough to squeeze in a 6 man FW squad exactly.

A S9 AP2 Large Blast isn't going to do anything to a flier. If he is going for maneuverability, the Riptides can move up on either flank, which gives two bubbles that are roughly 20 across (9 inch melta range plus Riptide base) where can get toasted, especially if he double taps the FBs.

I was just going with one suicide suit. Realistically not both Piranhas are going to make it to the opponents line, so its just a thought. Good catch on him being outfitted illegally, it was late haha.

OP, when doing FW squads have them at either 12 total or 9 total bodies. Optimal number for avoiding morale checks that first round of shooting. In this case, have the one with the Ethereal at 11 and the other at 9.
