Subject: Questions on priming Imperial Fists...

So, like the title says, i am going to be painting up the test models for my new Imperial Fists project. I'm trying to figure out the best primer for the yellow to sit on. My instinct is to use Krylon White, but I've recently had a lot of problems with white sprays (ended up with a terrible gritty texture, even in a climate controlled area), though I've also been considering using some of the light grey auto body primer I usually reserve for Forge World models.
So I guess my two questions are: 1) what is the best method for white spray primers? & 2) will a light grey primer give the yellow a dirty color (I'll be using a coat of Averland Sunset first)?
Any help, tips, or ideas would be great.

Light grey auto primer if you need a rattlecan. Otherwise Vallejo PU grey primer through an airbrush / spraygun.
Light grey primers have very little effect on the yellow over it IME.

Vallejo primer is also fine brushed on. Yellow should go over it pretty easily.

You could try using some of the yellow sprays from AP.

I would suggest white primer (grittyness is a function of droplets drying in the air - there are literally dozens of posts on it) in a can.
If obviously, that is not working, I highly recommend the vallejo surface primer - its amazing stuff.
If you don't have an airbrush (there are tons of other threads on that) I would suggest one - it gives you possibly the best control for applying a smooth coat of primer.
Of course, then you can do other cool shading affects as well.
Best of luck!

I would prime it black, then drybrush with boltgun metal and paint the shoulder pad yellow ... making them Deathwatch.
It's the only way ... muahahaha

I've just painted an Iyanden force.
I first used black primer, sprayed light grey Vallejo Model Air paint on it and then used thinned Citadel Yirel and Flash Glitz Yellow. However, the result of this is a dark yellow that tinges towards orange.
Then I used Vallejo Airbrush Primer in White and used Vallejo Model Air Yellow on that. This resulted in a very bright and clean yellow.
Without an airbrush, a yellow primer can should be the way to go to avoid visible brush strokes and uneven distribution.
Maybe Armypainter offers something that's certain to be suitable. You can spray a can into the paint cup of an airbrush and spray it with that. I don't see why you couldn't do the same with another container and brushes for touchup later.

All the imperial fists in my gallery were primed with GW spray black, the later ones are painted with an airbrush, iyanden darksun, golden yellow and highlighted with sunburst yellow, several thin coats of each. The stormraven was done with the new paint equivalents onto a black undercoat also, I'm pleased with the nice shade of yellow achieved this way, I don't think it is tinged towards orange at all. My next model will be tested with a grey primer though to see what difference it makes.
Despite what some forums or threads say, do not try and use the Army Painter Daemonic Yellow for imperial fists, I tried it and it's far to bright, like a step up again from flash gitz yellow bright!

I use Army Painter Skeleton Bone for my yellow marines (and my 'nids which are mostly bone-coloured anyway). Nice, soft tone to start any colour from.

I've been happy with my first 5 imperial fists' yellow, which I primed with a light gray primer. I have a darker grey primer I amy or may not try, and I think the bone colored primer sounds like a solid bet.
I would think white primer lends itself to a more bright yellow and sometimes the brighter imperial fists can look like urine marines so I woldn't do white but I could be wrong on that. Automatically Appended Next Post: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1Wg4gR0jzU
This guy uses light grey I'm going to try and use his method for my next squad. I like having variations on paint jobs to separate squads.
