Subject: Imperial fists or Salamanders on lava bases?

So im going to start a small project in the next few months, and its going to be imperial fists or salamanders. I actually prefer the imperial fists fluff more, though i doubt they will ever get much support from gw. I think both armys are great, however i just started practicing lava bases and would like to use them. The only thing that bugs me is that they fit salamanders fluff perfectly and would sadly wash out with the yellow if i went with imperial fists. What do you guys think? I'm no expert painter but it is fun trying to make new models. Would lava and yellow space marines be a bad idea?

As a Salamanders player, I love looking at other Sallies armies, and I can honestly say that I think the lava base thing is played out. I think that if you made the lava more orangey-red, it would look really killer with the Imperial Fists. You could always re-color the flow and have it be some kind of alien river or chemical flow, if you wanted. I know that may not have been the exact kind of response you were looking for, but I hope it was some kind of help.

No thats actually a pretty good idea. I've been searching around and i can say that the lava bases with more orange than yellow do look a lot better. I agree though, the salamanders get a little to much lava going sometimes. Seeing it painted on the armor and the base can be a bit much.

It's a major gripe of mine, as a Salamanders painter, that people seem to think Salamanders exclusively fight on lava/hot worlds. If you're think of going with Imperial Fists or Salamanders you could follow the route I take. I give only my 'special' units such as the my Captain, Command Squad, Veteran Sergeants etc. lava bases, with all my standard units such as tactical marines, terminators etc. on a simple rocky/ash base to tie in with the overall theme but not provide a too ostentatious, over-the-top look to the overall force. You could do this with either of your selections. If you like Sallies, but hate the OTT bases, then just do less of them. If you like IF, but aren't sure on the colour clash, then again - just do less of them (But as Jim says, you can play around with the lava effect to give a different colour). Actually, on that note, if you were to construct your own bases (From GS and/or corkboard), you could tone down the yellow/orange with black/maroon patches of cooled crust floating in the magma. These are just suggestions mind you, so I hope they help.

I would do whatever color scheme and base type that you like, then just play them as a successor Chapter using the specific CT rules you like.
IronSalliFistUltraGuard.
Painted black and white like Templars, but with a desert themed sandy base.
Gives you a unique army all of your own, while playing around the different Chapters for variety.

Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

I think salamanders would be awesome on the lava bases! They look great to me. People who say it is overdone are just haters.

Your right, the Lava look on the IF will wash out.
But as another pointed out, Alien chemicals or slime pools would look cool.
