I've just acquired my first ever 40k army in the form of a huge batch of Ultramarines. This will be the list I take to games. I'm not looking for a SUPER COMPETITIVE list, but I don't want to get my ass handed to me every game. Take a look?

HQ 1- Marneus Calgar - 275 pts
with 2 Honor Guard, 1 Company Champion, Guard with power swords; champ with power maul- 85 pts

in HEAVY 1, Land Raider Crusader - 250 pts

HQ 2- Chaplain with jump pack and Primarch's Wrath- 125 pts

Troop 1- 10 man tac squad (to be combat squaded) with Lascannon, Flamer, Veteran Sergeant with Power Sword and Meltabombs- 195

Troop 2- Same as above

Elite 1- Terminator Assault Squad with Thunder Hammer/Shields- 225 pts

Elite 2- Terminator Squad with Cyclone- 225 pts

Heavy 2- Devastator Squad with 4 missile launchers (1 with flakk ammunition), sergeant with boltgun- 135 pts

Heavy 3- Predator with twin-linked Lascannon and sponson heavy bolters- 120 pts

Fast Attack 1- 2 Land Speeders with Assault Cannon- 160 pts

total: 1990 pts

I realize that putting Marneus in the Land Raider may be a bit of a waste and that I should maybe put the assault termies in there instead of deep striking them, but I think Marneus is my favorite part of the army and I really like HQ units to be the "star" so to speak...I was in fact considering getting rid of the assault termies altogether and beefing up the honor guard or maybe using the points for another unit of regular termies, or some sternguard...thoughts?

IMO Marneus and Shooting Termis aren't too good. But here's a list that I feel would work better.

HQ

Marneus - 275 pts

4x Honour Guard - 150 pts
3x Relic Blades

in Land Raider Crusader - 260 pts
Multi Melta

Chaplain - 120 pts
Termi Armour

Troops

Tac Squad x 10 Man - 200 pts
Lascannon, Flamer
Razorback
TL Heavy Flamer

Tac Squad x 10 Man - 200 pts
Lascannon, Flamer
Razorback
TL Heavy Flamer

Elite

5x Assault Termis - 220 pts
4x TH/SS

Land Raider Crusader - 260 pts
Multi Melta

Fast Attack

2x Land Speeders - 120 pts
2x Multi Meltas

Heavy Support

Stalker - 75 pts

Predator - 120 pts
TL Las, Heavy Bolter Sponsons

You combi squad the Tacs with the Flamer squads going with the Razorbacks. The Lascannon Tacs, Predator, and Stalker stay in the back. The Land Raiders, Land Speeders, and Razorbacks drive up. It seems like a pretty good list. - Feasible

Thanks for the input. Sadly I have limited models...the no rhinos/razorbacks is probably what I'll miss the most. Would assault termies be worth it if they were deep striking?

Assault Termis are either win big or miss big. If you have other units posing as immediate threats, kind of like the Land Raider and Land Speeders running up the board, then they can do a lot of damage. I'd make 3 with TH/SS if possible

Do you have other models to swap in?

I would run Calgar in the LR with either the honor guard or the assault terminators. I don't think you need both in your list.

The chaplain doesn't really have a job. I like having them in CC squads, but two HQs for close combat is a little overkill. Not sure the bolter is the best option for him. I run mine bare bones, with just a jump pack and bolt pistol. Or Cassius, as you are a UM player if you have a transport to put him in.

You have no transports for your tacs, so are going to have to footslog it to objectives. At 2k, blowing 5 man combat squads off the table is not that hard. I might try to get some more troops. My rule of thumb is one troop pick per 500 points. If you are going to be aggressively moving forward, some melta/combi-meltas might help. While LCs work for AV14, melta is my tool of choice for dealing with it.

Shooty terminators are nice troubleshooters, they are good almost everywhere. Just keep an eye out for AP 2 stuff, or they will go -poof-

If you are going to go with flack missiles, go all in. If not, you have one guy shooting with any chance of hitting, and the rest of the guys just watching. Alternatively, just run LCs or other big guns and hope the dev tactic re-roll on snapfire is enough to down a flyer.

I've still got the old pricing affecting my thoughts on preds, so like the auto/las better then the TLLC/HB pred. They have a slightly different focus, but are comparable.

When not packing MM a/o HFs for close support suicide runs, my speeder load of choice is the TML/HB. While I like ACs, I feel the speeder is too fragile a platform to run them on. You need to be in bolter range to use them, and small arms can bring you down. I'd rather toss shots downrange from 36".

Overall I think you list is light on troops, AA and ways to deal with AV14. Not a crippling lack, but shy of what I like to see in a 2k TAC list. Depending on your local meta, it might not be too bad. But be sure to pamper and protect your tac squads. Most games are objective based, and you lack to boots on the ground to take and hold in the face of focused attention.
