As the title indicates first off I'd like a bit of advice on how I should paint up a set of Salamanders Mk III armoured marines. I'm intending the armour to be relics of the Pre-Heresy/Heresy period, however I'm not sure on which scheme the armour should be painted with. I'm torn between painting the armour a deeper green such as seen on the Forgeworld Terminators below, or in the current 40K scheme seen on my own Terminator Sergeant.

To clarify my point, I'm torn between the schemes as I'm not sure if the Salamanders changed their scheme in the Post-Heresy Era. If they didn't, then the difference between the FW example and my own is simply a difference in taste between FW and myself and can be explained as such. However, if they did change the shade of green from darker to lighter, then it brings up the question of whether or not the 'relic' 30K Mk III armour would be preserved in Heresy colours, or if the Salamanders would repaint it to match the current 40K colours. In this case I'd like to ask you Dakkanaughts which you think I should go with? Here's some pics showing the two different schemes:

Those Forge World ones are more grimdark, more realistic and pretty incredible looking. I would go with that personally.

The second one has that early 'Eavy Metal cartoony thing going, which was never my preference in 40K stuff.

I do think they would repaint any older armor to match their current, unless its a very distinct suit they may not use as much or at all, for instance. Otherwise, your average battle probably leaves the paint ruined, so yea, probably repainted after each use.

So would you suggest I go with the same scheme I used on the Terminator Sergeant (The second image) but possibly add some weathering to make it more gritty? (In fact most of my Salamanders could do with some weathering so that may be an incentive to get learning )

originally, the Sallies had damn near black armour...
FW has made them a darker green...
now they are bright green...

here is a link to the original painting guide for Marines:

you can see the Sallie on the cover, holding the flag with his homies...
he is a white guy, interestingly enough, with white hair...
so, there have been a few retcons along the way, but i really like the muted green for the Pre-Heresy scheme...

personally, i would go with the FW scheme for Pre-Heresy...

cheers

i would avoid painting flames on them though with whatever colour scheme you use. The glowing embers/coals effect looked far better (one of the FW guys did the front of a predator or LR i believe like this)

if a dolphin will jump out of water for fish, just imagine what it would do for chips?

I should say that whatever scheme is to be used, they'll be matched with marines painted in the brighter green scheme above.

@badgermeister - Just curious, but is there any reason not to paint flames on Salamander? - they are honorific markings after all...
