Greetings everyone,

My conundrum is as follows: I have a guard list I'm pretty happy with, consisting of a PCS, infantry platoon (PCS w/ Meltas, +2x Inf. Squads w/ lascannons, and 2x Special weapon teams with flamers and a demo charge in Vendettas), Veteran Plasma team in a chimera, Psyker Battle Squad in a chimera, 2 vendettas, 4x Griffon Mortars (2 squadrons with two tanks in each), and an Aegis Defense line (no quadgun, just the line)

That force costs 1450 points exactly, leaving me 550 points for allies.

If I run pure guard with no allies, my thought is to drop one Griffon and combine the Mortar tanks so I have one Griffon squadron with three tanks, and add four Leman Russ Battletanks into the list (No upgrades, just four tanks with battle cannons and a hull heavy flamers) in the form of two squadrons of 2 tanks each and use the remaining ~25 points somewhere in the list as needed. (upgrade the chimeras to have pintle heavy stubbers or something, and put krak grenades on the PCS perhaps, options are plentiful).

However, that said, I've settled upon using Grey Knights as my default option for allies as follows:

Inquisitor Coetez as the HQ for 100 points, good save, psyker with a psychic hood, Daemon Hammer, and the benefit of his "I've been expecting you" rule.

One ten man squad of Grey Knight Terminators with 2x Psycannons, 4x Force Halberds, and 6x Daemon Hammers. For 450 points this is a troops squad, objective holder that is hard-as-nails and puts out a withering amount of firepower that benefits from prescience on Coetez every single match (Yay primaris power). Honestly, bang for my buck, I feel like this is the best option I have despite them not being battle brothers with my I.G.

However, with the new Space Marine Codex out, I'm now considering my options a bit and sussing out if I have another idea. I don't have point values as I don't have the codex as yet.

The idea I have is running a Librarian, Perhaps upgraded to have 2 powers a turn (I think its about 100 points for this but again I don't have the codex yet) Or at very least, run him bare bones.

Troops: Run a tactical squad, likely 10 man, with a grav gun or plasma gun and sergeant with a powerfist and combi grav or power axe and bolt pistol (I expect this would cost around 180ish points perhaps). Maybe 8 man, not sure.

Last but not least, maybe run a squad of legion of the damned as a line breaker/nuisance unit? Not sure on that. Would certainly be a fun squad to use on a flank with their deep strike putting them close to a hidden unit in cover to drop rounds into it.

Is that a better option than the Grey Knights & Coetez? What're folks opinions?

Thanks in advance.

You don't know me son, so I'll explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.

Depends on what your going for really. 1)with the terminators from the grey knights you have a valid CC unit. This would keep your Gaurd from getting over ran and then Give you a tough unit to just soak up wounds. i don't remember if you can take an apothocary in normal greyknights termies but i would and then march them down the field thus drawing alot of fire.
2) with anything you get out of the spacemarines codex your really just adding more shooting to your list.

Why would you deep strike a lander raider?

Because i can and hey it worked didn't it?

Agreed, the GK terminators just feel more versatile and certainly tougher for the points cost, at the expense of fewer wounds. I just wonder if I can't get more mileage out of more models is all. I'll get a better idea once I have the codex & point values in hand and am able to compare & contrast them. Just spitballing right now.

You cannot put an apothecary in a grey knight terminator unit sadly (oh, but if you could though..)

Thanks for the input Lemartes.
