In a tournament, how would you feel about me playing my Imperial Fist army but using the Ultramarine Chapter Tactics?
That's fine. Just let me know at the start of the game!
No way. Your Marines look like Imperial Fists so you have to use their Chapter Tactics!

I have a Space Marine army that I've been collecting over the past few years which I've painted to represent the Imperial Fists chapter.

I don't own any Devastators or Centurions Devastators however, thus making the new Imperial Fists Chapter Tactics a little pointless, but I rather like the Ultramarines Chapter Tactics and think that suits the way I play much better.

In a tournament, how would you feel about me using the Ultramarine Chapter Tactics?

Let me know your thoughts!

You'll have use whatever chapter tactic was written on the army list you officially submitted for the tournament .

THIS

plus, if any gives you flak for having guys that look like imperial fists but play like a Ultramarine chapter, jsut tell them. "Oh no, this is my custom chapter called The Imperial Fists, its a 4th founding chapter descended from the Ultramarines and created by the High Lords of Terra to secretly replace the original Imperial Fist chapter who were all executed for being 'that f-ing guy'. FTFY.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

As long as you use the same CT for all 3 games, it's fine.

as long as you pay the tax, it's fine. maybe, in the future, you could change the chapter badges to an Ultramarine successor

I can not answer this because the question opened with 'in a tournament.' With the nature of tournaments being the way they are, there is no choice for the players involved. As long as the army is approved by the organizers, then any opponent facing it would have to play or immediately suffer a 'crippling defeat.' Therefore the only correct answer is one you have not listed, so I can not answer.

In general, I would let you play such an army without issue in and out of a tournament.

I would put the caveat in that if your playing your yellow marines as Salamanders, then they should be played as Sallies for every game through the event.
It would be pretty WAAC to see your opponents vehicle heavy army and decide your yellow Dev Squad is Fists so they get tank hunters, then next turn decide scouting transports are the way to go and suddenly your playing yellow Raven Guard.

Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

That's why I said use the same CT for all games. Choosing a CT is done during list design now so it should be set in stone before you even know your opponent.

One year, GW's Grand Tournament rules stated if your Space Marine army was painted as a specfic Chapter with their own codex, then those were the rules that you were required to use. While your tournament probably doesn't have a similar rule, it never hurts to be sure and ask the tournament organizer.

defeat. It would seem that stupidity is as eternal as war.'

Thanks for all your responses guys!

I would write on my army list which Chapter Tactics I was using, no swapping between games of course. That would very clearly be cheating!

As long as you don't try to convince me that Marnaeus Calgar uses Imperial Fist tactics or Lysander uses Iron Hands and so on we will have no problem.

I believe that was his point.

With this being tournament-specific - ignore any personal opinions we have. CHECK WITH THE TOURNAMENT ORGANISER - only their opinion matters.

Not only will they likely not pay attention to what some bunch of dudes on an Internet thread said, but if they allow it, you can use their authority to cut off any discontent from your opponents. If you haven't checked first, you'll waste your time, your opponent's time AND the TO's time if a player forces it to be checked out.
