A friend of mine is starting an Imperial Guard army and could use some assistance. Here is a preliminary list with still 50pts left.

HQ:
CCS - Lascannon - 70pts

Troops:
Infantry Platoon:
PCS - x4 GL 50pts
3x Infantry Squad - 3x Autocannons, 3x Flamer - 195pts

Veteran Squad - 3x Melta Gun, 1x Heavy Flamer, Chimera - 175pts
Veteran Squad - 3x Plasma Gun, 1x Heavy Flamer, Chimera - 190pts

Fast Attack:
Vandetta Gunship 130pts

Heavy Support:
LRBT 150 pts

Total: 950pts

Any suggestions and help would be most welcome, thank you.

Looks like your friend is on the right lines here, the setup for the platoons is fine on the whole, and the rest of it only needs minor tweaks. I'd swap the GL on the PCS for flamers, as that makes the unit far more effective defensively.

First off, I'd suggest dropping the HF on both vet squads, as they are expensive and don't synergise well with the other guns. If you want HF, use them on the Chimeras instead, and take a LC/AC for the vets (or leave the slot blank, they're likely going to be moving a lot so HWs are less important).

Secondly, I'd recommend taking a Regimental Standard on the CCS, it will help keep the guys on the board rather than running. On the whole, they are almost mandatory if you are using platoons.

The only other thing in the LRBT. On the whole, the basic version is outperformed by its more specialised counterparts, thanks to the FAQ making Ordnance less useful. I'd suggest this would be the best place for the extra points, and I'd recommend one of the three following setups: An exterminator with HB sponsons for cheap dakka, a Demolisher with no other upgrades for sheer threat level, or a Vanquisher with LC/PC for an expensive unit that can take on almost anything and do a load of damage.

Other than that, this is a good solid base for a list.

Another suggestion is a master of ordnance for long range threat that can hit anywhere.
