The Climate Commission has been scrapped and billions of dollars in renewable energy funding effectively frozen as the Abbott government moved swiftly to wind back Australia’s climate change response, as promised.

Outgoing chief commissioner Tim Flannery, who was told yesterday morning he had lost his $180,000-a-year, part-time role, said abolishing the publicly funded body was “the government’s prerogative” but he would not be silenced. …

Scrapping the Climate Commission is expected to save taxpayers $580,000 this financial year and $1.6 million in following years. …

The changes to the commission came as the government pursued plans to wind up the $10 billion Clean Energy Finance Corporation, created by Labor to fund renewable energy projects that would otherwise struggle to get commercial backing.

Qouted an excerpt from the link. $180,000 for a part time job? Color me unshocked that this thing got the axe.

It's coming from a guy who doesn't beleive in climate change, and has said so on every occasion he can. You didn't even had to look at the wages of the people on the commission to know what was going to happen.

Personally I'm waiting for the clusterfeth with pointing asylum seekers back and Indonesia to come to a head, that will be entertaiing to see how this 'government' handles a crisis.

Somewhere in south-central England.

$180,000 for a part time job is how high executives and the "great and the good" make their money.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Great move in my opinion. That $0.025 (3 cents) saved this year and 7 cents over following years for each of Australia's 22.7 million people will be essential for their grandchildren to pay the ballooning fossil fuel electricity bills to survive the hellscape of future Australia.

No way, Australian politics thread started by a non-Australian! I am excite. But yeah, I agree with Loki on both counts. This was never going to see out the month, and I'm interested to see how they handle that.

Abbott promised us he really did believe in doing something about climate change, he was just opposed to the market based approach of the then Labor government. He wanted direct action, spending money directly on carbon reducing tech and infrastructure because that was better just because.

And so one of Abbott's first acts is to can the board that did spend on direct action...

So obviously Abbott was lying and it isn't a problem with the current approach to climate change but with the idea of doing anything at all about climate change. My question is if counts as a lie when no-one believed it in the first place?

It's pretty much on par with board positions on major companies.

That still doesn't explain the secreted resin.
